Hello Everyone, I was reading my 1st question posted on CSN.(10/12/2010) At the time I didn't realize just how good the advice I received really was but reading it today really made me 'think twice." 1.Glenna M suggested that Connie apply for financial assistance at a good cancer center and to apply for medicaid. (Glenna,I pray everyday you beat cancer a 2nd time)
2. Jimbo recommended that if we could not get assistance that we might checkout treatment overseas and that he had received top notch affordable treatment in Thailand.
3. Linda (abbimom) suggested we might have a fundraiser, check on medicaid, and that Connie would need to get any dental work done before treatment (radiation).
4. Mike (luv4lacrossee) suggested a clinical trial and also to be persistant when applying for financial aid
5. MarineE5 suggested the Compassionate Allowance and explained that even if Connie received Social Security, she could still have to wait 2 yrs for Medicaid
6. Dawn (sweetblood22) re-affirmed the 2 year wait for medicaid
Now I want anyone here that reads this to know how Connie attained treatment and how important the advice we received really was. The 1st thing we did was apply for financial assistance at MD Anderson Cancer Treatment center. The next move was to apply for Medicaid at the Social Security Administration. The employee there mentioned to us that Connie would be elgible for Compassionate Allowance and that this would speed up her application for Medicaid. Our next move was the National Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) which is a temporary insurance that is available for people who are un-insurable due to pre-existing conditions who have not had insurance for 6 months, it cost around $600 a month if you qualify. Then we proceeded to call the aid dept. at MD Anderson everyday, which I think they decided to give her assistance so we would quit calling.. As it turned out Connie qualified for assistance at MDA and had her 1st appointment on Nov.16,2010. She had her 1st chemo treatment on Nov.26 2010 approximately 6 weeks after her diagnosis. It was the longest 6 weeks of our lives but we were appreciative to get started. She was accepted into a clinical trial and Connie was on her way to recovery. I write this to recap how IMPORTANT the advice we received here really was. I hope this info helps anyone that might be desperate for treatment with no insurance. I would like to thank Glenna, Jimbo, Linda, Mike, MarineE5 and Dawn, the advice you gave us was priceless! Connie was granted Medicaid in Dec. 2010 and I am not proud that Connie had to receive Medicaid and would like to re-pay the government for all the treatment she received. Unforetunately, I know the cost of cancer treatment is so high that is impossible. I would like to see the cost of treatment be lowered as the cost for cancer treatment is astronomical and ALL Americans be offered catastrophic health insurance at an affordable rate. After all our government is picking up the bill and we as taxpayers are paying it or borrowing the money from China to pay for it. Any plan is better than No Plan as cancer regrettably is not going away. Sincerely, Homer & Connie

    Your post made me smile
and also re-affirmed my belief in humanity that if we all come together for a greater good (all of us enjoying a better medical quality of life) we would be amazed at what we can accomplish.

Thank you for posting this and I hope Connie continues to improve her quality of life.

    pre -existing condition insurance
what a great informational post. I may lose insurance in two years. I went on to the pre-existing condition website. Is it for real and has anyone actually qualified for this program? What an emotional relief this would be for me. Would be very interested in anyone who has applied and been approved and premiums amount information???? Thanks for the information.

I guess it does take a village.
A great illustration of exactly how valuable this site is.

Each persons unique experience and advice makes this place one of the best tools to get through treatment, IMO. Wish I found it before I started radiation.

I was upset in the begining that I had to have Medicare. I'm over that. I can only do what I can do. They sure didn't make it easy for me in my life to get any insurance because of my blood disorder. I was even denied insurance in the past. Now with cancer also as a pre existing condition. My COBRA payments had gone up to over $600 a month. When you aren't working, or even when you are working that is a crazy amount of money!

    The money side
Dawn- had a co-worker who was forced to retire early, and the COBRA for he and his wife cost him over $900/month- which he paid for with his cashed-in 401 money. And that is an outrageous amonnt of money for anyone.

And Homer- there's nothing wrong with getting help to cover the costs. My Cousin's treatment, then major surgery and rehab, have been paid for entirely by the government. I do not know the amount, but can safely estimate it to be well over $225K. And we're not talking about a hip or knee replacement that only improves the quality of life- we're talking C, and we all know that's a life and death fight. And you look at all the pork barrel spendings, etc., etc., that our government does which is a joke- you and Connie gave the government a chance to spend taxpayer money as it rightly should be spent.

Ratface, Their are requirements and a person has to qualify. I know you have to be turned down by an insurance company for coverage due to a pre-existing condition. We tried to get Blue Cross Blue Shield but they wanted us to pay the premiums first then Connie would be rejected later. I was not comfortable with sending the premiums for Connie, wait 30 days for them to refuse her coverage and then see how long it would take to get the premiums back. I didn't understand why they wanted money period when they told us up front she would be rejected. Doing the paperwork seemed like it would take 6-8 weeks and Connie needed care immediately. As it was she ended up waiting 6 weeks from time of diagnosis til she had 1st appointment with her oncologists. I think it's a great federal program though once you get through the red tape. The internet address is: https://www.pcip.gov/ I have a friend who elected to join the Texas high/risk pool and it cost him almost a $1,000 a month and he had to wait a year for coverage to begin. Since he had surgery & radiation for his throat c. and add the cost of perscriptions, he is now $250,000 in debt and his insurance will begin in October. The federal plan is much better. Hope this helps, Homer & Connie
