Yoga
Had my port in when I started exercise classes geared to older adults, 10 minutes very low impact aerobics and then stretching working with stretch bands. weights, etc. I explained my situation to the instructor and we decided I'd not use any weights or bands for a while, just move the arms and do general stretching. I also tried Hatha yoga classes but found I had problems supporting myself on my arms (like doing cobra, for example), also I was still very dizzy and couldn't lower myself completely to the mat. I solved this problem by taking chair yoga offered by my health club with modified poses for me. I started mid Nov. 2010, my port was removed March 2011.
Hope this helps a little.

for responding to my question. I have read that yoga is good for people with breast cancer and I will do whatever it takes to keep it away. I am gonna check with my gym about the chair yoga. My right arm/chest area still seems to be weak and I would really like to strengthen it a bit. I also thought yoga might help with my anxiety. Thanks friend for your help.0 -

I do yoga (Yin and Vinyassa) 4-5 days a week, with no problems. I still have my port. Yoga is great for the body and mental state. Do the poses you can and when you feel weak, just relax in child's pose. Yoga is a go at your own pace practice and there's no pressure to proceed beyound your comfort zone. Enjoy it and Do what you can ...
Good Luck... It does the body good!!!
Hugs~

I would love to do yoga, but, I don't even know where to start. I guess I need to check with my cancer center and see if they offer it like yours did Lynn.

I started yoga with my port in and had no problems. I do gentle yoga classes twice a week at a center near me. They ask for any medical conditions and if your doctor knows that your are doing this. My MO had said to exercise more so started at Curves in Feb. then yoga in May. I had my port out at the end of July. I feel a need to stress that this is GENTLE yoga or maybe haifa, not the physical stuff that Bob uses on The Biggest Loser. I feel great and I sleep better on the nights when I've been to yoga.0 -

Now up to 4 classes a week! I do a more gentle yoga called Kundalini yoga which has more breathing and meditation.
I did yoga throughout chemo (only one class a week then) and never had problems with more port.
Yoga's great for relaxation.

I have started a gentle yoga again after 3 1/2 years. My physical therapist told me never do a down dog pose because of my arm. I told a instructor about my limitations. You always need to talk and inform your instructor about your condition before the class.0 -

I occasionally did yoga during chemo and I loved it because it gave me energy. My doctor said there were no limitations when I had my port in. It was placed very close to my collar bone, so sometimes it was awkward doing the downward dog pose. Just do what makes you comfortable as long as your doctor approves.
