Memorial Wall

My NOCC local chapter will have their 5K next Saturday and will feature a memorial wall, where we can post names, photos, etc of people we have lost to ovarian cancer. I am working on sheets for all our CSN teal angels.

Putting faces to the disease is important. I want people to SEE that this is not something that happens to "other people."

I have been walking 3.5 miles regularly, just to make sure I can do it. I am determined to walk, and to finish, it, for all of us and especially for the ones who didn't make it.

    Hi Carlene
So glad that you are recovering so nicely that you can walk 3.5! You'll finish that walk with all of us cheering you on. Thanks so much for posting our Teal Angels on the Memorial Wall. I often think of the angels that were here when I first started posting on CSN. They were so supportive, generous and caring and I don't know any way that we can repay them but to try to pass it on.

    Max....if you would like to
Max....if you would like to "walk" with my team, just send a $20 check (tax deductible) made payable to NOCC and mail to me.

I can't post my address on the board, but if you message me, I will send it.

One of my team members will wear a sign that says "I am walking for (your name)."

Last year I had a 9 person team, ranging in age from 2 to 66. (The two year old cheated. He rode in a stroller.) There are pictures on my Facebook page (just search for Carlene Mullins and you should be able to find me).

All the money goes to Ovarian Cancer awareness and research. You can check out NOCC at Ovarian.org

There is probably a chapter in your area, as well.

The girl who is always in charge of the memorial event (last year we did a balloon launch and she paid for all the balloons, ribbon, etc herself) lost her mom to OC a number of years ago, but she is one of the hardest working, most loyal members we have. She says putting flowers on a grave is nothing, compared to the feeling of being connected to her mom that this gives her. I admire her very much. She walks the 5K by herself. Her family refuses to get up that early on a Saturday morning. I told her that's why it meant so much to me last year, when my daughter, who is so not a morning person, got herself and 3 kids to the event before 7AM. Last year, I think she did it because I asked her to. This year, she is looking forward to it. It gives you a real sense of empowerment.

    Walk
Today was the Winner's Walk of Hope in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. My sister, my daughters, my niece, my husband, a few friends and myself all did the walk. I was asked if i would like to cut the ribbon for the opening ceremonies. I did not want to because I thought a survivor should. The event co-ordinator told me the survivors talked about it and they wanted me to, so i asked my sister to join me and we cut it. It was very empowering. I will do this event every year and next year I will volunteer as well.

Here's to you mom, we all love and miss you very much. I hope you were able to watch us today and be proud.
