OT Spots on lungs

My husband has been going through the VA the last 6 months. He had a injury and has a Purple Heart. Having lots of Tests appt etc. They are winding down with about all the testing. They found out he has a enlarged heart and spots on his lungs. With just the lung X ray they couldn't tell what it is.They sent him for a CT scan that same day. After that scan they still don't know what those spots are but havent ruled out lung cancer.I can't understand why something can't be found yet. What other test is there except for a biopsy of the lungs. Is there any other test to be done???

They also found emphezema(spelling wrong)hearing loss, heart disease, lung problem(whatever that is) and alot of stress related problems. He is getting a pension but not sure what.Just finding out all these serious things and also the mental problems is bringing out the worse in him now.He is getting ready to retire so we can enjoy life and he is afraid of becoming dependent on oxygen and possibly in a wheel chair in a short time.

Lung cancer must be hard to detect. I know of a young woman who couldn't get over a cold.A X ray was done.Showed nothing. Then a month later showed Stage 4 cancer with some tumors in the bones. This is what my husband is worried about.Me too!!!!!

Lynn sorry , try lung cancer board
Lynn I am very sorry for your husband medical conditions. I think CT/PET can show dye consumption. Please ask your questions on the CSN lung cancer board, I am sure they will give you better advice and directions what test should be done.

    Thank You
Thank You. I thought about the lung cancer board.I just knew some bc survivors have been through lung tests and and some fought lung cancer.

I think the CT scan is very reliable.Maybe they are thinking of doing biopsies.I just know they said he had a significant amount of spots.

Hi Lynn, First of all, I'm sorry you and your husband are going through this. My Mom had lung cancer in 2007, and what her docs did was an MRI, and then a biopsy the next day. I hope this helps some, I do know there are many woman on here who have had lung mets and I'm sure there be on shortly....All my best to you and your husband, you're in my prayers.

    Biopsy Is Needed
    Hi Lynn,

I was diagnose with widespread pulmonary and pleural metastasis in 2008. A ct scan was ordered when I had a dry cough and it showed the many, many lungs tumors and lining ones. I had a PET scan which stated the same. My oncologist said, "it needed to be biopsy proven" this is so they know what type it is and what kind it is. Mine was breast cancer and it was ER positive. This is needed for treatment purposes.

I had a VATS which stands for video assisted thoracic surgery. An overnight hospital stay is required and I was back to work a few days later.

Now there are many other things besides cancer that it can be. I had expected my dry cough to be a side effect of the drug I was using for one of my autoimmune conditions.

The trouble with ct/scans and MRI is that they show all the bodies problems. Some will never cause a problem so until they do, leave well enough alone.

Have your doctor find him a good thoracic surgeon.

    Best to you,

    Doris

    Lynn,
    If they feel they have

    Lynn,
If they feel they have ruled out lung cancer, you should ask for a pulmonary specialist. Even if it is cancer, they may have more resources to diagnose what ever it is. With the other lung problems he has, it may just be some thing related to that.

Lynn, I am so sorry to hear this news!
Please know that you and your husband are in my thoughts and prayers. Please take 1 step at a time, and post when you can. As also suggested there is a 'lung cancer' link here, maybe you can get some additional information -- a place to start.

    Thank You All
Thank You all.Alot of info here but will also go on the Lung Cancer board and read up on things there also.

SIROD- Good to know that just because lung growths/spots are everywhere in both lungs people do live longer lives. I wish you many more years since your dx of BC and lung cancer.I'm sure it has been a long hard journey. My huband and I will feel better knowing people live for years.I am still back in my younger years when someone was dx with cancer they only lived 6 months.

Its seems they are concentrating on his heart now so maybe they are thinking of surgery or a biopsy. With the lung problems, enlarged heart and heart disease he is a risk. When he has a heart procedure(blockages in heart and legs) he is usually awake or given a mild sedative.

The one thing I noticed with my husband is not a cough or bad cold.It was shortness of breath for doing the slightest thing. He would breath heavy for a long time. That can be his heart. I kept telling him he needed to see a doctor.

I'll let all of you know what is happening. Tests have been going on since March. We've learned alot so far.

    Breast Cancer Metastasis to Lungs
Just to make it clear, I don't have lung cancer. I have breast cancer with cells that spread to the lungs and lining. VATS are done on people with lung cancer also.

My oldest friend had the same procedure and same thoracic surgeon as I had but she had lung cancer.

Different cancers have different prognosis. Even with Breast Cancer stage IV, every woman has a different prognosis, even for the same organ. It depends on a lot of different factors.

Some stage IV cancers have great prognosis as in testicular, childhood leukemia, some throat. Breast cancer stage 4, it would be very rare to have it an immediate death sentence.

Wishing you and your husband the best.

so sorry about your husband. As I reflect on 9/11 thinking about all the heros, your husband and others who have fought for our freedom are true heros. My BIL tried for years through the VA to prove he had symptoms from Agent Orange from the Vietnam War. He died this past February and it was confirmed he had cancer from Agent Orange. Too little, too late for him. The cancer was in his lungs, bones and brain. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers for some news.

    I said it wrong
I said it wrong. The part about BC spreading and then it is called BC in the lungs is something I've been learning on this Board. When I was dx all I was told I had non invasive,Stage 0, tumor was 1/2 centimeter and clear margins. No chemo or radiation for me.I knew nothing about what most of you talk about.I was never told about grades etc. Just I had DCIS. There is so much to learn about cancer. So many types and so many different ways people are treated. SIROD It has been 3 years since the recurrance of the bc in your lungs. Want you to know you are in my thoughts and prayers.I learned something through this. I really look up to all of you who've been dx with a much more advanced cancer than mine and doing so good. Some have had ups and downs but are still strong. All of you amaze me of your strength but I know inside it hurts.I know the feeling.Breast Cancer has changed me.My life will never be the same.

Char, I am so sorry about your brother-in-law.What a shame it was never dx.My husband has many medical problems. He even has a family history of heart problems but he was told that no matter what problems developed it was caused from Agent Orange. It can't be proven otherwise. My husband will be 70 next year. After all these years he wasn't checked for and didn't try to get benefits. He decided recently. If not we would have no idea about the lungs or enlarged heart. Now the waiting.
