    Yes my discharge did not start until I began to heal. Perhaps 4-6 months after radiation. I can't really remember exactly but I know it was not immediate. I also had constipation issues after radiation stopped and still do off and on. Again I use OTC laxitives and watch my diet very closely. The only bad thing about the laxitives is for me personally it starts a cycle of imodium then laxatives and on and on. Whale snot....ewwww. But funny. Not sure what seems to cause that either. Geee does the fun ever stop. Not complaining though I am thankful to be alive and healthy again.

    I will have to be on the lookout
    You guys are too funny! I will have to be on the lookout for "whale snot" in a few months. I'll be sure to pack extra undies. My husband just asked me if I was crying (again) as I covered my mouth, but I was just trying to not bust out laughing about the "whale snot"!! I really appreciate the humor! :)

    Hey Y'all, I haven't been on in a while, but I do have questions. I've had the discharge for over a year now, the gas, the bouts of pooping all over myself. Now I've got the bloating. Have had it since May of this year when they tried an experimental chemo on me called Atgam. It is painful. I can't eat or drink anything. I look, and feel like I'm 9 months pregnant. I had my stomach drained 2 wks ago and they took out 2 liters if fluid. I went back to my onc and she set up an appt for me with a gastrowhatever doc, but that's 6 wks away. I'm gonna call her tomorrow and see about setting an appt for more drainage in the am. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks, Melodie

    I can't remember when the mucous discharge started for me but I am 26 months post treatment and still have times when I have it. Not a lot but it happens and my colo rectal doctor told me over and over again that it is radiation damage. He said that it should go away at some point but doesn't know when.

    Sorry about that nasty little issue you are experiencing, dubbed "whale snot" per this web site. But of what I can tell this seems to be a healing process. Perhaps it's a good thing.
    I have been so excited for the last 3 days or so ---- the snot has finally slowed down. Whahoo....should I go buy some new underware? Don't know if that is a factor of my diet, or what I should contribute the change to. But It is a welcome change!!!!!!!!
    And as always, I will end my post...just happy I am alive and healthy.
    By the way who ever dubbed this issue "whale snot" I am just curious do whales really have snot? tee hee.

    Yesterday at work, wearing my new Antonio Melani pant suit for the first time, I 'whale snotted' (notice I used it as a verb) in my pants. Thankfully, it wasn't much and it's clear and doesn't smell like poop . . . perhaps whale snot's only redeeming qualities.

All are of the same conclusion "quit complaining you are alive". Of course they state that much more diplomatically. I carry spare underware -EVERY WHERE I go. And I suggest we all invest in Hanes, Northern Toilet paper and Baby wipes stock. We should be rich in no time!
    But really the discharge makes my bottom quite sore due to all the dampness. I just can not keep that area completey dry. Doc's suggest powder or cornstarch. I keep that area very clean but it is still a problem. It's like a newborn baby's butt (from the radiation burns) so I have also tried a barrier like A&D ointment. For me personally nothing helps. My discharge is constant it seems like. If anyone has a suggestion please help.
    But as I will always end my post with .....we are still alive.

    And yet my best advise is never trust a Fart! ( Ok that was a bit crude but true)

    Sanitary Pad
    I used a thin sanitay pad to line the back side of my underwear. This helped. It gave me a little more confidence and was easy to change rather than going through multiple changes of underwear daily.

    Not sure if I should be happy or sad for you. As I said I beleive this is a healing response. So if that is the case, congrats girl. Now you know my advise about never trust a fart...don't trust whale snot either. Unfortunately I wear scrubs to work (very thin and unforgiving) and I agree for the most part the "snot is clear and un-frageranced" however every once in a while, it will leak thru your clothes. I don't want to be negative but if this side effect has started with you, wear some protection. I sure would like to know what this side effect is all about and how long it will last. Or even how I can controll it. Whatever...preperation seems to be key here.

    Whale snot, part deux
    I've been whale snotting infrequently since treatment ended in Jan. It's not a concern for me. If it's the worst thing that happens to me this week, this month or this year . . .I'm aaaaaaalllllll good! :) After winning a battle with anal cancer, a little discharge isn't going to get me down!

    anal mucus discharge started for me around the 5th month time frame after treatment ended. do you ever see specks of blood in the mucus? I have mucus generally an hour or so after my 1st BM of the day ... sometimes I see old blood and specks of red blood ... small amounts...mostly it is a clear/brown color like stool about a tablespoon or so however have never actually measured it!!! yuk :). curious about your experience. sorry about the details however no one understands these things like we do! It is sometimes comforting that what I experience is in some way similar to others on this site.

    I have mucous occasionally, but have never noticed specks of blood in it. However, I do notice that sometimes it has a pinkish tinge, indicating to me that there's probably some blood within it. Most of the time it will just be a brownish color. I'm 3 years out from treatment.

    Yes, I agree with your advise - never trust a fart. I'm 3 months post treatment and have mucous discharge. I just discovered that Cottonelle has individual packets - handy to keep in one's purse. I found Sam's Club brand of baby wipes to be the best and least expensive. My 3 month old great niece and I use the same brand - LOL. When I'm home I run (not literally) in boxer shorts so air can get to the area.
