I asked my surgical onc and lead doctor about Salagen...she recommended Evoxac. I have been taking it for several months and it has really helped. Apparently evoxac is newer chemistry...

I have had zero side effects with Evoxac. Apparently Salagen can cause some profuse sweating. Has that been the case with you?

Btw, I'm 16 months post treatment and eating almost anything I want now...still need water with each meal...

Best of luck to you, and all here!

    Hope your dilation helps.
Hope your dilation helps. On your last thread about saliva, some one answered your question about another drug besides salagen. I don't know if you saw it, I don't think you answered them or posted to that thread again. I posted a link to that thread and one with tips for dry mouth.

    Evoxac / Salagen

I used both of them when I first came out of treatment for about a year, but did not find either one did any good for me. That is when I found the Stoppers 4 and been on it for the last 6 years.

Hope they work for you Robert.

I call my Doctor and she called in evoxac when I called my drug store they said thay would have to ordor it and the cost would be $269.00 for a 30 day supply my insurance does not cover it. That price is out of my range as i am on a fixed income. I guess i will make do with no saliva.

You got to be kidding me, that is so unreal and for your insurance not to cover it is not right either.

    Wow! That is craziness.
Wow! That is craziness. Can you find out if there is a generic for Evoxac? I can't believe they don't cover it. Did they explain why it wasn't covered? Let's see them go without saliva for just one week, and then see if they would want it covered. That sucks.

Robert did you look at the link I provided? Maybe there is something there that can give you some relief? Or I hear people say that acupuncture has helped them. Of course I don't know if that would be covered or how much it is.

Hondo, I just use the link that John sent me. I keep it in my notes, and then I just paste in the website I want to link and then what I want it to read.

Getting a ten day supply or
Getting a ten day supply or sample to see if it works, is a great idea.

As far as the grilled steak goes, I would love to have one too, but I haven't been able to choke one down, either- even when it was processed in the mini chopper, and looked like baby food. Yes, gross, but I really wanted steak and was desperate. My dog was very happy when I couldn't eat it.

As far as your doctor saying you NEED to eat meat, well, I know we want to, I know I REALLY want to, but you can be healthy and get in enough vitamins and nutrients with out eating lots of, or even no meat. You just have to be smart about combining proteins, and making good choices in what you can eat. I can give you ideas for eating meats, and meats that work for me. I have definitely had to shift my thinking and my way of cooking, and my approach to food. I can eat some meats, but they need to be prepared differently, and it has to be a fatty cut if meat, lean cuts are like sawdust to me however they are prepared. One thing I have found, is keeping the meat juicy is essential. A crock pot is a great way to do that because the meat cooks low and slow. I also only prepare ONE serving of meat at a time in my crock pot or anyway I cook it. Left overs get too dried out, and I cannot eat them, they will just go to waste if I do that, I just cannot swallow them. I went and bought a little crock pot, I think it's a 2 quart, it was only $9.00. It's about two - three servings in one pot, for me. Some meat ideas:

Lamb Chops. (must be the rib cut. Like a rack of lamb, but don't French the bones, because that is the best part, and leave the fat on) Theses are now my 'steak'. I can sear these in a pan, and I can eat them like you would a steak. Takes me 2 and a half hours, but I can get them down. I try and wait for them to be on sale, because they aren't cheap, and I buy them on sale and freeze them.

Chicken thighs. I can even eat these as fried chicken! I had really missed fried chicken. Just have to make sure it's not overcooked! Just until it's 165 degrees. Yes, I have an instant read meat thermometer. I also make chicken thighs in chicken soup and chicken and dumplings (crock pot). I have also cooked it in the oven, again, kept moist and cooked only until just done.

Pork butt. (I get the boneless strips) I cook these in the crock pot, low and slow, kept juicy.

Sausages. I like Johnsonville Brats or a local butcher we have here makes a plain sausage with no fennel or weird black pepper or anything in it. I do sausage and peppers or cassoulets in the crock pot, and it comes out great. For sausage and peppers, I keep my sausage whole, and brown it then put it in the crock pot, I fry the onions in the pan I browned the sausage in, and throw the onions over the sausage, then add sliced bell peppers. Cover with low salt chicken stock and cook on high for three hours. Since I cannot eat bread, sometimes I peel and quarter small potatoes, and put them in the crock pot before I put the sausage in. It's also nice over a short cooked pasta. I don't even miss the bread.

Beef short ribs. I cook these in the crock pot and they are good.

Some pictures of the above foods that I have made:

SEARED LAMB CHOPS RICE WITH PEAS AND SEASONED FLAT BREAD CHIPS

    SAUSAGE AND POTATOES

SEARED SCALLOPS WITH VEGGIES AND ORZO

SLOW COOKED PORK RIBS AND BEANS COOKED IN CROCKPOT A D FINISHED WITH A GLAZE UNDER BROILER

SEARED LAMB CHOPS WITH SAUTÉED MUSHROOMS & ONIONS GRAVY MADE FROM PAN DRIPPINGS AND SEASONED FLAT BREAD CHIPS

FRIED CHICKEN WITH MOZZARELLA AND ROASTED RED PEPPER SALAD

CUBAN STYLE PORK WITH RICE AND BEANS

I only eat meat a few times a week. Maybe three? The important thing is to get enough protein and vitamins and this is easy to do, if you make good food choices. I aim for 40-50 g of protein a day.

The rest of the time, I try and eat protein rich foods and combine them well to make complete proteins. Like rice and beans, corn tacos and beans, pasta and cheese, lentils and pasta, beans and vegetables, vegetable pies -like potato with spinach, oatmeal or barley with vegetables, chick peas and Cous Cous. These are great foods for proteins and CHEAP eats. Beans are great for nutrition and are filling and so inexpensive. When you cannot eat a lot of meat, beans should be in your diet, along with dairy (low fat yogurt, cheese, milk), nuts and seeds (almonds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds peanut or almond butter), and grains (like rice, oats, corn, whole grain pasta, barley...) Eggs, cheddar cheese, dried apricots, almond milk, soy beans, and tofu are additional foods that are good when you can't eat a lot of meat.

I have almost learned to look at meat as a condiment, rather than the main focus of a meal when I do eat it now. For instance, when I was married, and I cooked sausage and peppers, I would eat 3 sausages when I ate my portion. I now eat 1 sausage. I am not going to give up my dream of sitting down and eating a steak some day. I will still try one every few months.

In the meantime, I am thrilled that I eat as well as I do, I am not scrawny anymore, and I don't have a peg tube. Makes me happy.

    Hi Robert
Except for a little Fish now and then and many be a small piece of chicken once in a while I still lean mostly to being a vegetarian. Show me a grass field and I feel like a Bull, lol.

Not sure why but never did like the taste or texture of meat.

Wishing you well on your soon to be steak night.
