2nd post-op scan not as good as the first.

in Esophageal Cancer #1
I went in today for my second post-op follow up CT scan. I have a swollen lymph node on my windpipe in the lower neck area. I’ll have a PET scan next Friday (8/26/11) to see if there is any up-take and if there is I’ll be scheduled for a biopsy. I’m nine months out from my MIE (T2N1M0) and thought things were going good but now I’m pretty disappointed. I was just wondering if anyone else has had similar scan results and how things went?

    Joel, stay strong and positive. "If" it is something, Thank God you found it and as William said you had the MIE and if it is nothing thank God we have these tests that enable us to make good decisions. Take one day at a time and live in the moment, as we all should.

    I appreciate the support and prayers. The scan on 8/26 will be a full body PET/CT so I guess we’ll really know what’s going on then. I’m trying to stay positive and I understand that many things can cause a swollen lymph node but I also know that this is a prime indicator of a reoccurrence. I guess the CT results really took the wind out of my sails. Anytime any of us go in for one of these scans we try to prepare ourselves for whatever news we get but the reality is you just can’t prepare for things like this.

    I finally talked to my 6 year EC survivor friend and she said she has had "areas of inflammation" (one involves a lymph node, and the other involves an area at the anastamosis) that they have been watching since her first year and they never come back positive on the PET. Like William said, there are others on the site with similiar experiences who did not have reoccurances.

    Do what you have to do to shut your brain off until the end of the week. I recommend small doses of Xanax, long hikes, and afternoons by your pool! Remember, it takes just much less energy to be optimistic as it does pessimistic.

    Call a friend from Pennsylvania if you feel like it!

    It’s good to hear.
    Thank you Jeff for checking with your friend, I really appreciate that. It easies my mind to know that both your friend and William have had enlarged nodes that turned out to be non-cancerous. I’ll continue to hope for the best on Friday and will post my results when I get them.
