OT - 2 Seconds at Fair

Our Fair is going on and I took 3 'things to it for the Horticulture Section.

I got a 2nd for my Pineapple plant - started in late March/early April from the top of a fresh Pineapple that Hubby got for himself. It was probably a good placeing - it was the only Pineapple and they put it in "House Plant" section - could not live year round outside here.

I took 3 (number neded) of my Walla Walla Sweets for the produce section and they also got a 2nd. Why I don't know - I would not have placed them against the other "yellow" onions - they had no section for Walla Walla/Vidalia/Kona Sweets so they got put in Yellows.

The one I really don't understand is my Cholla - they were apparently DQ'd. Their tag had a big X across it (only one that i saw with any of the tags on anything. I will agree that they are small - started from seeds about 1 1/2 yrs ago. If they didn't want to place them so be it - but why the big X? I pick them up on Wed. evening so will ask then If there's anyone there that can/will explain.

Oh Ha Well - I just took them for fun - but it does sort of make one wonder. Last year I took one of my Bougainvillas (this summer was nasty/cold early on so they weren't ready now - will be in a week or 2 but not now) and was told IF I'd had it in a better pot it would have won so this year I made sure they were in nice pots.

Definately not something to "sweat"!

    Congrats on being a ribbon winner!! I don't know anything about fair judging, may be your Cholla was too small? Oh who am I trying to kid, I would have no clue. I always admire people who can make things grow...all I grow in my attempts at gardening are weeds, toads and bug bites. My house plants are the ones that can survive neglect, LOL

    Congrats! Sounds like you had a good time. I just love pineapple plants. I live in Florida so they usually grow pretty good here. My dad had around 70 of them a couple of years ago. There is nothing like the taste of a fresh home grown pineapple!

    I'm orginally from SW FL -
    I'm orginally from SW FL - 6th generation Native Floridian on Mom's side (Daddy's side had been wintering there since in the 1880's, moved there full time in the early 1920's but none were Natives). Used to grow all sort of 'thangs' outside back home that you can't grow in most areas. Here in Western SD (Black Hills area) they can't survive outside except in summer.

    I don't know - but I will try to find out (and possibly educate them LOL) Most Cholla (AKA Jumping Cholla) do spread by sections breaking off and landing on the ground. Some do have fruit that has no seeds in it but not all - there are about 300 different varities of Cholla - have no clue which varity mine are. I know these seeds came off of Cholla in the Mojave Desert (they were legal collections). My "Guys" are about 2" tall so they are little.

    OH Well - I will try to find out when I pick them up Wed. I got one ribbon that I feel is 'legit' (Pineapple), one I didn't deserve (Walla Walla Sweets) and one that I don't understand why it got a big X. There are quite a few that got no ribbons but of all the tags I looked at I'm the only one that got the X.

    Wow...that's something! I'm a native, but first generation. Working on third generation now.

    know what a cholla is! Anyway, congrats on your 2 ribbons - pretty neat.

    Chollas are NASTY cacti!
    My "Guys" aren't nasty yet as they are still very small but bigger ones have really nasty 'stickers'. IF you're out in the desert where they are native, you always carry pliers with you to pull them out of jeans or you if you get too close. They are often called "Jumping Cholla" as it does seem at times like they actually jump out to get you.
