White Blood Cell Count

in Head and Neck Cancer #1
Woke up this wed with a fever of 100.5, called doc and was told to take tylenol, did that, felt fine for most of the day. Around 1:30 in after noon took temp again it was at 101, called doc again , sent me to emergency room , my level was @ 1.8, spent the last 2.5 days in hospital, antibiotics and all. Levels now back to 5.8, so they sent me home. Did anyone else experience low levels after first chemo, infusion. Plus I had a neulasta shot this monday.

    Yes but not that low. You must have some kick a$$ chemo.

    Sorry for the problems and hopefully they will get it adjusted.

    Well my doc did say it was going to be the mother of all treatments...she just was clear as to whose mother it was going to be.

    she was right
    They told me mine was the "Cadillac" treatment...agter week 15 I wanted a Yugo.

    I did have a fever the first time and some inflamation at the cancer site actually...tylenol worked for the fever, Levaquin for the inflamation.

    A side note on the Neulasta....

    More than likely in a few days, your gonna feel like you have the flu..your major bones and back will ache pretty good...or at least more than likely they will.

    It only lasted a day or two, and only on the first of three Neulasta Injections that I received during the nine weeks of three week cycles.

    My WBC dropped from mid 5's, but only to 2 something..RBC went to 1.8 I think, or vice-versa can't remember...

    It took nearly a year n]before all of my blood work came back into normal ranges. Now at over two years, everything is still normal other than TSH is high and increasing little by little each test.

    Not That Bad
    It's not that bad...just nobody forewarned me and it threw in some anxiety that I didn't really need just starting off.

    I agree about the anxiety...I have to say I was more anxious getting in the car and driving home yesterday..but now I know what to expect, plus I have family coming from the east coast next saturday, I think the anxiety will lessen with someone in the house with me.

    My dad dropped that low after each of his treatments, was on antibiotics, had fever, and was hospitalized each time. And each time it happened 2 weeks post chemo. His doc says that its typical for it to be the worst at about 14 days before the body begins recovering. Im not sure if the time frame is the same for you. He just finished his last and final one on Thursday and though he feels fine now, we are expecting one last storm. I wish you the best and hope your family provides the needed peace and comfort!

    It affects everyone different I guess, some due well and others don’t, just keep watching it.

    My first infusion was on 8-8, felt really good, had the 5FU pump removed on 8-12, still feeling kinda good, really went down hill that wed morning. I received some really heavy duty antibiotics in the hospital, and have to take an oral form once a day for seven days.
    My family has rallied around this with me, even though we are 2500 miles apart, they are changing their lives to be with me thru out this.

    you are blessed to have family willing to change their lives for you. I am caretaker for my husband who finishe treatment on Thursday. It was a great blessing to have family visit and help me off and on during treatment.

    Praying your side effects are mild.

    Getting Through
    As we all say and Hondo reiterated....we are all different.

    Through the sixteen total weeks of cheo and chemo/rads...I never got sick once. I did feel crappy sometimes, and it was easy to become nauseaous if you thought about it and let yourself become that way though.

    Just stay positive, surrond yourself with positive people also.

    You can do it and hopefully with minimal side effects.
