when to start feeling menopause effects

Hi There. I am on the breast and thyroid boards...I have posted here before about having a hysterectomy due to cysts on my ovaries...So I had the surgery 3 days ago, and it didn't look like cancer according to the surgeon, so I am waiting for the pathology...now I am wondering how soon after the surgery did you experience hot flashes, mood swings, etc

I don't know when to expect anything to start and just wondered if anyone can shed some light on this...

    Everyone is different re: menopause symptoms
    I just want to say that you may not notice any symptoms of menopause because you are already on Tamoxifen and because of your age. You may no longer need to be on Tamoxifen since your ovaries are gone--see what your doctor thinks about that.

    I hope you make a quick recovery from your surgery and I'm glad that you don't have another cancer to worry about.

    My sister
    My 29 year old sister began to experience hot flashes almost immediately after her surgery. She is on a hormone replacement patch which seems to have helped her immensely.

    Two months
    I really started haing night sweats about two months following my surgery. I don't know if all the drugs (pain & chemo) delayed anything, but that is about how long it took for me.

    I started having hot flashes
    I started having hot flashes during the night a few weeks after surgery. I wake up during the night with my legs soaked from sweat. I also have hot flashes even when I take a nap.

    Started having hot flashes 3 days after surgery. They got worse during the 3 weeks following and at my 3 week check up I asked about HRT and was told since I'd had cancer they didn't recommend I take HRT. SO I'm on effexor which helps with the hot flashes and night sweats as well as mood.

    Ok, so this is day 4 from my surgery and I experienced a cold flash w nausea tonight...I was in the bathroom and all of a sudden got really nauseaus...came out and told my hubby and then felt really cold...like I'd walked into a freezer...sat down put a blanket on, then asked for another...he thought I was crazy...I then said heat up the heating pad in the microwave and give it to me...quick!! He did and I put it on my back...then moved it to my feet which helped much better...I was still cold 10 minutes later, but it was managible...

    I am so not looking forward to this...since I've been on tamoxifan (about 6 mths now) I've had a few hot flashes, but they were not too bad and only about 6 or 7 in that whole time.

    I used to always be cold, so the heat didn't really bother me much but I felt like I couldn't hang around outside as much this summer...this cold thing is not good for me....


    Ok, vented enough...thanks for all your input ladies...we'll see what comes next...


    By the way...any suggestions for gas pain after surgery??

    The only time I experienced chills was about two months afer surgery, when I had a staph infection. I got them really bad for about five days in a row, once a day. Then they stopped. I have always blamed them on the infection, but come to think of it, this was at the same time my night sweats started. If my chills were related to menopause, they were only very temporary.

    What effects? Seriously, it was a non-event for me.

    Those aren't menopause symptoms
    Survivor: The symptoms you described sound more like heart attack symptoms for a woman than menopause symptoms. Especially the nausea. A lot of women have a heart attack and have no chest pain only nausea, weakness and cold sweats.

    I think everyone is different when it comes to menopause, just like chemo. I had surgery in May and have yet had any menopause symptoms.

    I don't know how old you are but I had a full hysterectomy in February and i am 31. I will tell you that they also put me on zoloft which is an antidepressant right after surgery to help with menopause symptoms. I was unable to take hormone replacement because my cancer fed off estrogen. My symptoms started while I was still In the hospital. My fiancée always laugh because I would be hot and cold, hot and cold. One minute blanket all tucked around me then extremely hot five mins later. With the hot flashes I noted my pulse would race to and I had trouble walking. But that is all normal for surgically induced menopause. I see the pattern now, whenever I get cold and nobody else is then I know I will be getting a hot flash in a few mins. I like to use a wet washcloth and put it on my head and neck it will cool you down much faster.

    Hi Jbeans...I think I am like you...I sit it a chair watching tv with a blanket falling over one arm and a fan on the table facing me on the other side...depending on how I am feeling, one is always on me...lol

    I describe it as a sensitivity to feeling only extreme temps...nothing normal...

    Oh well, so far this is the worst of it...
