Sweet & Sour
It's not as bad as it sounds.......
Not sure why you think no more sweets ever...., you'll more than likely be able to taste sweets again. As for teeth decay and such, that's as now, other than you need to take more time and keep everything extra clean. While sweets will add to decay, they're aren't the only thing that will decay teeth.
Several of us here still have the same amount of teeth coming out as going in. Doesn't mean we don't have problems with them earlier in life than if we didn't have all of the radiation.
I think it's like everything else, everyone is different.
So far I'm two years post rads and my teeth are in the same shape as before. I haven't had any additional complications other than a crown. That isn't out of the norm for me as I had two crowns going in.
Throw in some pineapple and it'll be like a Luau.
Maybe a pot of beer and some hot chips....
Best,

It all come back in time to a new normal and taste and smell will be about the same once again.
Wishing you well my friend

I was wondering about the sweets thing, too. For me, sweet was the first thing to come back. I still struggle with my savory tasting too salty. Although it's miles better than two years ago when savory was pretty much inedible.
My ongoing battle with my teeth is more about my almost total lack of saliva, than sweets. When I am done eating anything I go and brush. I brush 5-6 times a day, and I'm still getting cavities. As far as sweets go, I do usually have a cupcake size muffin, or a child's size ice cream cone each day. Which is more than I used to. I never ate sweets before my 'taste shift' and before I needed to gain weight back.
I'm not sure if you know about the fluoride trays. Your dentist should be making them for you before treatment, and you need to make sure after all this that you go to a dentist that works with HNC patients. I go every 3-4 months instead of every 6 months. Hoping to stay on top of problems since I had to have a restoration of all my teeth.
At first I didn't get the pork joke, but then I got it. I always used to sit on the radiator at the back of my church while waiting to process up to the front with the choir. One morning, I'm sitting there on the heater, organizing my music and minding my own beeswax, when my dad comes up and stands next to me. I hear, "Sniff, sniff. " I ignore him. Then, a slightly louder, "Sniff-sniff, sniiiiiffff". So I look up at him like, what the heck are you doin'? He says, looking at my keister on the heater, "I smell bacon."0 -

When I'm at the beach and I see the ummmm well nourished girls, then smell their Hawaiian Tropic flavored/scented sun tan lotions....it always makes me think of Ham & Pineapple....LOL, hence the Hawaiin Luau...

The two things that caught my eye were the "no sweets" and the Skif's Hawaiian Luau. I now realize it has been just over 13 years. When I could eat, I still allowed "Sweets" in my diet. My favorite was chocolate covered macadamia nut. I have since lost two more teeth, but I think it is about normal for folks my age. There had been more brushing in my life and at least three visits a year to the cleaning lady. I was introduced to the life with biotene, Act, fluoride etc.
Somehow, I maintained my smell over the years. The food still looks and smell good. My food intake is now limited, but even at this old age and as Skiffin stated, I can still enjoy looking at those "...ummmm well nourished girls...."
In our life style, we just finished the party months after graduation. Party is almost like a luau, but local style with all the food I "used to like" to eat (LOL) on display. That raw fish [..ugh to some of you ] can still slip down my throat.0 -

Manapua was always one of my favorite roadside treats.....
A few of those with fresh shredded pork...mmmm and those nice cold sliced wedges of fresh pineapple and mango.
During my many trips along the Pali or Like Like....headed to tha back side of the island. Back in those pakalolo days where an elephant could step on your head... . I might even get lost hiking th trails out to Kaena Point. Maybe a venture up to Tantalus and Round Top to look over Punch Bowl and Diamond Head. Then days on the beach watching the hang gliders sailing off of Makapu'u.
But out on my Lanai a big party platter of assorted pupus, and a cold Primo hit da spot.

The orthodontist said about the usual looking after your teeth but with a lot more care thats where the no more sugar honey etc.. or products with them in it just artificial forever as well as cleaning after eating etc.. and 6 monthly Dentist cleans and check ups
to reduce the risk of decay because of removal complications (necrosis). I have all my teeth still and every dentist I have ever seen including the orthodontist said i have really good strong teeth.0 -

I just went to the dentist yesterday, I eat sweets all the time and not one cavity. The dentist said my teeth are in great shape. I have to see him every 4 months. I brush twice a day and floss many times. I do have to go in for a deep cleaning, but I think this is due to my last dentist total lack of knowledge. Also what is that pork reference? I don't get it?0 -

Well in Ray's original post he was referring to his radiation starting.....(radiation burns...meat cooking).
As for me, I just ran with it and my Abi-Normal thought process took it all down hill from there.
