Visited the remains of the Berlin Wall today, as well as many other sights in Berlin. The difference between East and West Berlin are remarkable!!!!

    So happy you are enjoying your time in Berlin ... Which is better - East or West? I can't wait to see the pictures.

    Pete and I were in Frankfurt several years ago, then onto Poland ultimating ending up in Russia .. However that was in February with lots of snow, 3 degrees below zero -- so perhaps not the best time of year to sight see -- LOL

    I remember living in Germany
    I remember living in Germany when the Wall went up...and the airlifts that had the US troops dropping supplies to those in the East. Such a scary time, even as a young girl. My dad being a journalist had the unenviable task of doing human interest stories~ the people's lives were so torn apart and it was just horrendous. In my mind's eye I can still see the families who, for myriad reasons did not get out in time~ they were left on the East side while their families were in the West~ their only communication was waving white hankerchiefs across the wall from high-rises.Funny how some images never leave ones psyche...
    I still remember Peter Fechter, the young boy who tried to scale the wall ony to be gunned down and his body left hanging until he died...he is mentioned in one of U2's songs.

    As a teenage girl and a Girl Scout, our troop went to Berlin...we had to have all of our papers and passports in order~ the train traveled though ( and stopped for inpection) in East Berlin on its way to the Western sector...I still remember the East German soldiers ( or perhaps they were Russian, come to think of it) coming through all the cabins, and me looking out the window at the guards with rifles on the train tracks. They were only a few years older than I was...

    I have many reasons for not having cared much for Ronald Reagan as President...but to implore Gorbachov to tear down the wall was a wonderful, important, life-saving demand. I am so glad it happened!

    Your description was so vivid! And, at the metro station FreidriksburgStrasse, where the split was between west and east, I saw a photo of a group of women standing and waving across the wall with white handkerchiefs....

    I cried at the memorial for the boy who, trying to swim to safety, was gunned down not by the side he wanted to get to, but the side he was leaving....sigh...we Americans sometimes forget how good we have it!

    My one impression was of how narrow and flimsy-looking the wall looked. And then I was reminded by a Berliner standing nearby that the top was covered in razor wire, and there were towers with soldiers with guns pointed all over....

    The big thing there now is....
    Curryworst! You can get it everywhere! (I prefer eiswein...pork knuckle...but I'm no judge...it's my fav, when I can find it, also in The Netherlands).

    I had curryworst with fries and strudel for dessert as my 'last meal' in Berlin....mmmmmmm!
