My left vocal cord is totally paralyzed and I too have a raspy voice. Doctor told me that if it were going to get well it would happen within 12 months; mine never has returned. I have found that keeping the mucus down helps the voice at times.

Wish I had better news to tell.

    Thanks
I have some paralisis on the left side of my tongue, so maybe the nerve the cut has somthing to do with this also, or they cut another nerve. Seemed to get worse over the last few months. My speach has not been that good since my neck disection, but my voice was stronger than it is now.

    symptoms
I to have numbness to the left side and front of both sides of my tongue. Numb on lower right side of jaw and my entire chin. Also if I stick out my tongue it points to the left rather than down the center.

The damage for me was to the trigeminal nerve. I suspect the same for you.

    Good luck with "new normal"

    I also
I also have what they call a dead vocal cord. first when it went out they called it paralyzed and said hopefully in year it would come back and it did. after two years recovered it went out again and now has not worked in 6-7 years and my doctors call it dead.

i was told in the first go round the single vocal cord would more than likely become strong enough over time that your voice would become the same as before treatments. that too happened but now after the dead cord it is very raspy. the doc said the raspy sound comes from liquid hanging on to single cord.

wish i had also better news.

    Donald duck

I know what you mean Brad, I use to preach a few years ago but lost the voice and sound like Donald duck now. I have days when the voice is not too bad but then like the wind it is gone. Doctor tells me it is because of a damage nerve coming down the left side of my face into my neck, also have problems eating with it sometimes.

    Hi Green
Only one half side of my face goes numb along with the tongue making it hard to eat and swallow. What is really bad is that every now and then I get a very bad pain down the left side starting at the Jaw going into my throat, it is like a ball size pain in the neck and numbs everything for almost 5 mins before it easies up.

If it was not for bad luck I would have none at all

Been there and done that. Dr told me the pain sessions would "only last a few seconds". Ha! My first episode lasted for four days. I remember my grand-daughter giving me a hug and when she touched my right jaw I literally saw stars.

Oh well still on this side of the dirt.

Oh my if I had one to last 4 day it would kill me as the pain is so intense that it almost pulls me to the floor when it starts. It is like a kidney stone in the throat and not a thing I can do to stop it from coming on.

    wow
Thanks for the wake-up call fellers. I can still talk and my voice has dropped a bit but nothing like what y'all are describing. Did any of you do physiotherapy for your neck, or see a speech pathologist? I just finished doing the former and am working on setting up doing the latter. Just to make sure I am getting the max out of what I have, and hopefully avoid losing any more.

I put off doing a show with my main band until just a week ago to make sure my voice could hold out for a full set (about 45 minutes). So far so good. Counting my blessings.

    Be well.

One main nerve runs on each side of the voice box, so two large nerves control opposite sides of said larynx. I was in an accident back in '68 and suffered a crushed windpipe at the larynx. My left side has been "paralyzed" ever since, and so I've had the raspy voice for a long time. I was told from the damage done by that dashboard that the nerve to my left side will never function again.

Think you need to have a better explanation. "Collapsed" might not be the best term, as it doesn't really explain what mighta changed with that side of your larynx. Did the physical structure of that side change, and how? There's only two places for the side to go- into the windpipe, or away from the windpipe. Or does it also include the tissue around and behind that side? Or is it the nerve damage? Your ENT should be able to explain it better, so you'll know exactly what's happened, and what might be down the road.
