First CT scan results tomorrow...

My husband had his first scheduled CT (not PET for some reason) scan yesterday post chemo/rads. They could not do the dye because his "number" was too high. We meet with the docs tomorrow afternoon. Of course, we are nervous. Anyway, here we go...reading hawk711's post with great news certainly gives us encouragement, along with everyone else on this board. It has been said many times, but we want to say it again...THANKS everyone for your support and encouragement. Of course, we are hoping to have good news but also know if it's not, you are here. ;...)

    Likely
You will be very happy with the news you get. That's typical for the first PS/CT, which is used mostly for a baseline to compare future tests on. So, try not to be anxious about tomorrow. Last April there were some 9-10 of us who had them, and all but one was perfect, and I think the one exception turned-out okay. Think the night away with how you will celebrate the good news of tomorrow.

    CT or PET
First, thoughts and prayers on good results....

CT versus PET could be based on many things....first timing on when you finished treatment. Some MD's don't like to do a PET before 4 - 6 months post treatment because of false positives and radiation residual.

Another factor could be insurance related...the PET is around $10,000 compared to the CT that's around $2,000 I believe.

You have very good odds based on history here like Kent mentioned of a favorable report, and if not more than likely it'll be residual and clean on your next go around.

    Best,
    John

HI KARE, WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT WHEN THEY SAY THE NUMBER IS TOO HIGH FOR PET SCAN. WHEN THEY TAKE BLOOD PRIOR TO THE SCAN THEY CHECK THE CREATININE LEVELS, CREATININE IS THE WASTE LEVEL IN THE BLOOD STREAM THAT THE KIDNEYS CLEAN OUT. IF THE LEVEL IS TOO HIGH (NORMAL IS 0.6 TO 1.2)IF THE NUMBER IS SAY 1.9 THAT MEANS THE KIDNEYS ARE NOT FUNCTIONING AS WELL AS THEY SHOULD, THE STUFF THEY PUT IN CAN BE HARMFUL TO KIDNEYS, THEY DON'T WANT TO DO ANY MORE DAMAGE TO THE KIDNEYS IF SOME DAMAGE IS ALREADY THERE, DO NOT BE STARTLED, IF CISPLATIN WAS THE CHEMO, HIGH CREATININE NUMBERS ARE NOT UNUSUAL. I AM OVER 2 YEARS OUT OF TREATMENT AND DO NOT HAVE CONTRAST OR DYE OR PET SCANS IF MY CREATININE IS OVER 1.5. IT IS CURRENTLY 1.7, I DO THEREFORE HAVE SOME DAMAGE BUT NOT ENOUGH TO OVERLY CONCERN ME, I HAVE ONLY MISSED ONE SCAN BECAUSE OF IT, I HAVE A PET COMING UP IN SEPTEMBER, IF MY CREATININE IS STILL AT 1.7 IT WILL JUST BE A CAT SCAN AND AN MRI HOPE THIS CLEARS THINGS UP A LITTLE.

POSITIVE THOUGHTS FOR A CLEAN SCAN
Hi, it will all be OK. There are a ton of us who have all had good scans. I know the waiting stinks, but in the end, it will be well worth it.

    Anxiety...ugh!
KareGiver, we cannot underestimate the degree of anxiety at these scan times. I had to take some anti-anxiety medication in the waiting room before getting Mark's first scan results. I was worse than he was...much worse.
Good energy coming your way for good results.

    Thank you friends,
For all of your prayers and good wishes for my husband's "first scan." Also, thank you "denistd" for the creatinine level info. You were right on! Everything you relayed was what was said 'quickly' to me but my comprehension at the moment wasn't strong, as well as the moment I posted. ANYWAY, even without the dye, the scan looked good. One small lump showed up but the doc felt all was well after the exam (lots of gagging, of course)! I am tearing up as I type this because of the support received from all of you...Kent, Hondo, John, Sweets, Debbie, Mike, Kim and Arndog - among others. We will never forget that this is our journey and, certainly, not take things for granted any more. Good health and love to all of you!
