Dressing
I keep/kept the dressing on as long as I had blood (after insertion) and whenever I have to put meds (antibiotic cream) if it starts getting red. Otherwise I leave it open, wash it in the shower and swab it sometimes with peroxide. Some folks are against the peroxide but I have never had a problem.0 -

I agree on the peroxide, nothing better to kill germs with and add oxygen to the boddy.

I used a pad around the PEG held down with paper tape. My dr said to keep it dry and swab with peroxide every other day or so. I shaved my chest to let tape get a hold.
My wound would seep sometimes and the bandage kept my shirts from getting a stain...
whatever works for you is the right thing, just keep it clean around he hole....0 -

I used a pad through the second week of the tube surgery. After that my Dr said no biggy, the hole was clotted and just to minimize direct pressure on it while showering. I do keep it clean with q tips and hydrogen peroxide daily.

Yep, I kept gauze around mine (3x3), held on by top and bottom paper tape. And, yes, did shave my tape areas. I also used peroxide, but have learned there's better stuff to use. Just Dial soap and water might be good enough. If you have a tape problem with the skin, there's a netting to hold the upper-tube in place. Had mine for 15+-months without a problem.

I liked the bigger drain sponges, I think they were about 4x4. They always wanted to give me the 2x2, which were too small. I would change mine about 3-4 times a day. No tape, I'm allergic. I had a stretchy netting that went around my middle to hold it to my body. Here's a picture.

Good solution for PEG tube
One of our onco RNs applied a 'catheter stabilization device,' it's a lot simpler than it sounds, it's made to hold a Foley clamp but works perfect for a PEG tube.
It's just an adhesive rectangle with a little clip, you coil the end of your PEG tube around once and it easily clips into the device, which is comfortable and low profile. It's 100% better than trying to tape the tube up or having the web encircling your body. Ask your onco for a Foley clip and give it a try.
p.s. to Sweetblood: I wonder if you'd be allergic to the adhesive?0 -
I probably would be. I hadLelia said:Good solution for PEG tube

I probably would be. I had huge blisters on my chest where they taped a 24 hour heart monitor to my chest. Good God that was awful!!! My stepmom was so scared to rip that tape off. Omg it was awful. I wouldn't even try it after that whole incident.0 -

luckily Jim has no allergies, but I do and how! I had a breats biopsy and boy did I get blisters. Its a pain when you have surgery to not be able to use adhesives.
The peroxide is interesting because we were told nothing but soap and water. Jim has not had a problem with a rash, etc. Just a pain to shave chest and deal with the tape and gauze ordeal.

I really didn't mess with mine, either. I just used soap and water in the shower. The less I messed with mine the better.0 -
