Yesterday in the paper there was a story on the guy who developed the hpv injection. It seems that in 12 months he will have a vaccine for skin cancer. His studies have shown that cancer is caused by a virus and he believes all cancer is caused by hpv. Really interesting that maybe one day it will be a common vaccine to prevent cancer.
Another story I read is that head and neck cancer is not the same as oral cancer and our treatment should be reassessed and not treated the same as head and neck c. Anyone know anything about either info. Xxxxo

    Since 1996, our oncologist Maura L. Gillison has been on the leading edge of the research you mention; having begun her work at Johns Hopkins, it continues at Ohio State University's James Cancer Center.

    There's an interesting '09 story in Forbes on her work, I don't think I'm allowed to post links here, it's the 11/02/09 issue of Forbes. Googling her name plus HPV or other key words brings much captivating reading on her work as well as tonsil/throat cancer.

    Let me add, Dr. Gillison isn't just a great research scientist and MD. She's a wonderful person we rely on a great deal and her nurse practitioner Joni Lutman RN is absolutely the best in the business. These two women have our lifelong respect & affection and in many ways we owe Don's survival to them along with our surgeon, Matt Old.

    Don must have gone to the James for his treatment? That is where I went also and I do believe I met Dr. gillison. My doc, Dr. Teknos found HPV in my cancer also.
    Thanks for the info, I just googled Forbes and read the article. They told me had I not had HPV present in my mass my survival rate was about 60 per cent but with it my rate upped to 80 per cent.
    I love the James. I found all docs, nurses, techs, receptionists and even the cleaning people to be loving and caring and kind. If I lived in Columbus I would be a volunteer there in a heartbeat.

    Thanks for the information; I too hope that soon someone would come up with some kind of Vaccine to help people with C. It is about time with all the money put into research that something other then a better chemo comes out of it. Right now my cousin wife it at MD Anderson dying, they are only giving her a few weeks at the most.

    Thanks and yes she made her peace with the Lord. she just made 40th last week and leaves behind a husband two small children.

    My new head and neck Dr. Sara Pai at JHU has a clinical trial on a vaccine that will prevent HPV+ cancer from comming back. Dr. Pai is waiting FDA approval for the trial. She hope to get the approval in the next couple of weeks and start the trial in the end of the summer. She has a video regarding to this trial on the JHU Cancer Center Website. She was looking for head and next HPV+ cancer patients with Stage III or IV to partipcipate.
