Dear Janelle,

I too, can't believe the doctor punctured you during a routine colonscopy. May I ask you,
did you have this procedure in a colonscopy medical practice, or in a hospital???? I am scheduled for a colonscopy this Sept. I am scheduled to have it done in a hospital. Although rare, having this procedure done in a hospital envirement is safer if anything should happen. My friend had a terribled reaction from anestesia years ago in one of those medical practices. Now, she has it done in a hospital.

Janelle, you could of died. Sorry. Not sure if you remember?? My small bowel perforated in Sept 2009 which was caused by NHL. I had a CT scan, and was rushed, I say rushed into surgery to have my small bowel resected. Anything leaking from that area in our body is poison. I can't believe they made you wait 11 hours because they thought there were more serious emergencies.

My thoughts to everyone. Even though a doctor may tell you, or insist, it is safe to have colonscopies in a medical practice that specializes in colonscopies. A hospital is more prepared for emergenices, not to have you transported to a hospital in case something goes wrong.

    Private Practice doctors
    I go to a Women's Health Clinic, my doctor is a MD, they typically refer their patients to other private practice doctors. I know several people who have had their colonoscopy done by this doctor, including my husband.

    I had all my records sent to me so that I could review why the ER staff decided my situation wasn't an emergency. there is no note of what situation delayed my surgery. the only thing I noticed is that my pain level was a 4. so maybe that was the reason.

    as you know your system is completely cleaned out before this procedure, so the surgeon who does these must have felt I would be ok as long as they kept me sedated. but it was my husband who lost years off his life from the anxiety and stress of seeing his wife in this condition for 11 hours! not knowing how much poisenous gas was leaking.

    Last summer it was the chemo for NHL and now this! we are wondering what 2012 is going to bring us.

    I have a beautiful husband, two awesome daughters and son-inlaws! Life is good, but I wish it could be better!

    Dear Janelle,

    I know how you feel. Just when everything is good, and we have so much
    to be thankful for, along comes NHL. Most of us are blessed with wonderful
    families and friends. Please don't worry about 2012. One day at a time.

    What happened to you shouldn't have happened. I am so glad your husband and others
    had no problem with this doctor, and everything worked out. I am not as kind or
    forgiving as you. I feel the doctor was careless. I wonder, would you return to him
    for another colonscopy????

    Before I had my first colonoscopy in 2004 I was so scared of perforation. I spoke with
    my internist about my fears. He told me perforation is rare. But, if it happens it can
    be very serious. Regardless if you are cleaned out or not.

    Forgive me for my opinion, it seems it differs from yours. That's OK. I appreciate so
    much each of your posts to myself and others.

    Maggie, I will never have another colonoscopy. there is no history in my family and my onc wanted me to have one because of NHL. my husband will not return to this doctor either, he says he will go to the hospital for his next one, which is coming up soon for him.

    I agree with sticking with the hospitals and not using private practice clinics, etc. lesson learned the hard way and I've shared my story with many, so they too now know not to use private practice doctors because this can and does happen. might as well be close to the operating room, just in case.

    I'm even having 2nd thoughts of returning to my regular physician, because she referred me to this doctor.

    like you said, one day at a time.

    Wow! What an ordeal you went through! I'm just glad everything turned out "ok" and you are feeling better and healing good. Gives me cold chills reading that you sat for 11 hours waiting to be taken of.. God bless you and your hubby...must of been the longest 11 hours EVER for both of you.     Can't blame you
    Dear Janelle,

    I can breathe a sigh of relief knowing you and your husband will not return
    to this doctor. As for you, I can't blame you for not wanting ever another
    colonoscopy. I wouldn't think you have to worry about that. I believe if
    everything was clear, you wouldn't have to have another one for 5 years. You
    can cross that bridge in 5 yesrs.

    If and when your husband makes his appointment, he must insist on having the test
    in the hospital. The new doctor, I am sure will understand. If not, find another
    doctor. There are doctor's that will do the colonoscopy in a hospital.

    Janelle, I hope by now you are feeling better. Yes, one day at a time.

    Gosh Janelle, what a total scary thing. I am so glad you are on the mends and everything is o.k. I always have mine in the hospital but I never worry about having them. I will now. Take care Joanie
