    Unfortunatly a colonoscopy does not assure they will find the cancer. My husband had
    a colonoscopy in 2004 and 2008 and still ended up in 2011 with a 3cm cancer tumor that caused a blockage. He is now stage 3 with 7 lymph nodes positive. We have been informed by several doctors that it should have been detected.

    Put me in
    that club as well, though I am stage IV.

    Still, even though it is less than perfect, I recommend everyone get their scheduled colonoscopy, they do save lives.

    More like the cancer you can avoid ...
    the article does not present any information on beating the cancer ... just that prevention and early detection can save lives. A no-brainer, really. I would like to see more published articles about investigational research that's going to CURE this disease once it has advanced.

    We do not discount the value of a colonoscopy...just sad that sometimes cancers are missed. In our case possible twice.

    Colon Cancer and Colonoscopy
    I can relate to your husbands misfortune. I had a colonoscopy in August of 2009 and was told I only had two polyps, internal hemmorhoids and no cancer. I was told to have another colonoscopy in 3 years. I started having bowel movement changes about mid 2010 but when I discussed it with my primary care physician he passed it off as gastroenteritis. Finally after three visits to my primary care doctor I changed physicians. The new physician is an internal medicine specialist as well as a primary care physician. He immediately had blood tests and a CT scan performed which came back positive for cancer. A second colonoscopy done by a colorectal surgeon confirmed stage 4 colon cancer. Needless to say I am totally disillusioned by the two doctors originally involved. From this I've come to two major conclusions.
    1) Be sure you have an outstanding Primary Care physician and not just a prescription writer.
    2) Have your colonoscopy done by a colorectal surgeon and not a gastroenterologists whose primary practice is giving colonoscopies.
