How to buy a decent wig? Online or in a shop? Anyone know shops in the San Francisco Bay?

Hi everyone!

I did not think I wanted a wig. But now when I am about to go back to work, I changed my mind. I went to wig shops close to where I live. There, the wigs did not look too great. The most expensive wig they had was around $100. My insurance pays up to $350. Im willing to add my own money to that. But Im not prepared to pay thousands of dollars for a wig I will wear for a couple of months. What experiences do people have with their wigs and wig purchase? Did you buy in a store? Online? And if anyone lives in the San Francisco Bay area, can you recommend a wig-shop here that carries more expensive (but not the thousands of dollars variety)?

Any comments are much appreciated!

    I spent a little more on mine
    I got 2 human hair wigs on line after consulting with the gal who has done my hair for about 5 years. With human hair she was able to color it to match what my hair looked like before and she helped me pick a style then cut it to be more like my own hair. I spent around $375 for 1 and then got a really short one just for fun for less than $100. I have paid her to wash and style them as needed to make them seem more real and less hassle and have had a lot of compliments on my "new do"

    One was a Raquel Welch brand and the other was from the Paula Young catalog (no, not a paid endorsement of either). I couldn't afford thousands of dollars for a wig but have been glad to have them since I see around 100 people a day at my job and just couldn't stand the thought of all the pity, stares and questions.

    I had three
    Hi, I bought one from the TLC catalog, I had one from Raquel Welch, and one that was a Zsa Zsa Gabor. I liked all three of them, and got compliments on all three...but the most compliments on the Raquel Welch one...

    Look up "A Lady's Touch" - they are in San Rafael. Jeannie is the owner and is WONDERFUL. She fitted me for my wig 2 weeks before I started chemo and I got the Raquel Welch Infatuation style in chestnut - check it out on "headcovers.com." They ordered it for me and once it arrived - a week later - they set me up with Vida, who met with me on a Saturday morning at "A Lady's Touch" and styled it for me - i.e trimmed it a bit and also steamed it (with a clothes steamer!!!) into place.
    They deal with all the insurance stuff and are AWESOME to work with !!!!!

    Give them a call (415 454 6058) - they have a great selection to chose from.

    I have found a place close by that seems similar to the place in San Rafael (which is a bit far for me). Will have a consultation next week. The Rachel Welsh collection does seem nice! Wish me luck :)

    If you decide to do the Susan Komen Race for the Cure in Sept. let me know. I will be doing it with my husband and grand daughter. It would be nice to meet up.

    Thanks for reaching out! Im not sure how I feel about such events, and I will probably pass as I am still in treatment at that time (radiation). Good luck with your run!

    don't run!
    We do this walk because my grand daughter goes with us. I used to do the Avon Walk but 39 miles is too much for a 7 year old. (She was 3 when we started doing Susan Komen only 3 miles)
