Just met with 3 year survivor with no reoccurance

in Ovarian Cancer #1
I work in a wellness setting and just met with a woman who got dx with Ovarian 3C in 2007 and after tx, she has not had a reoccurance. Just had a recheck done last week and CA-125 is good. There is some good news out there---thought I would share. I did not ask about her tx (but wanted to) because it was not the focus of our mtg. She is in her 40s.

    About 17 out of every 100
    About 17 out of every 100 women diagnosed at stage IIIc will be cancer-free for at least 5 years, following first line treatment. There is a woman in my "real life" support group who has been NED for almost 12 years. My surgeon also did her surgery. I'm hoping he has magic fingers.

    I too am 3C and I am NED right now, although my CA125 just went from 49 to 55. Not sure what it means as CT scan was clean. It is so great to hear the survivor stories. It gives us all hope and encouragement.

    The more I learn about this
    The more I learn about this disease, the more I realise that there are no two cases of OVCA that are alike--I believe it is a highly individual disease. Since there is no single causative factor for the cancer there is no single treatment let alone cure for it either.

    As much as I like to hear stories of survivors, I cannot relate to ANY of them as their cancer is not my cancer. Their remission is very personal to them and mine is very personal to me. Just as my spiritual beliefs are very personal to me, too.

    All that being said, I have to do whatever I can do heal myself, even if it is an unproven treatment because I couldn't live with myself otherwise. I have to "do it my way."

    Hearing stories of survivors has the same effect on me as "my neighbor just won the lottery...good for them."

    @cfont11: seriously think about the research where women who took the longer chemo breaks possible before resuming treatment did better (in terms of quality of life) than the women who got into chemo when their CA-125 hit 70. Treating on the CA-125 level ALONE has not been proven to have ANY long-term survival advantage.

    Thank You for sharing, I too am a 3c. I find out August first line of treatment worked when I get my CT Scan report back. I am so scared! I want to be NED sooooooooooooooooooooo bad.
