Yes It aims at the cancer area and is more directed and it doesn't just blanket the whole area, and damage good cells. I hope that helps. Lori

    Lori is right--
IMRT stands for Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy, and is a more precise treatment than old types of radiation. It will target the area much more specifically, causing far less damage to surrounding tissue. This is the type of radiation I would insist upon, given that you'll be treated in a very sensitive (and very busy!) area. If standard protocol is followed, treatment will begin with zapping of your entire pelvic area, groin, and lymph nodes, and of course the tumor. They will probably reduce your field of treatment once or perhaps twice, meaning they will no longer be treating your entire pelvic region and focusing on a smaller area. Usually the last few treatments are referred to as "boosts," which target the tumor only. Please be sure to ask your radiation oncologist about the necessity of having a full bladder during radiation. If you have read the thread on this site discussing that issue, the doctors seem to have differing opinions. I was advised to have a full bladder to lessen the effects of radiation on the bladder and prevent damage. Also, discuss with your doctor the creams/lotions/gels you may use to alleviate any burn pain. Most can NOT remain on your skin during treatment--be sure to ask!

No, but I just recently read where someone was thinking to use tomo or cyberknife for a lung tumor.
