2nd Ultrasound for Cysts in 6 months .... Why

This past Jan had mamogram, followed up with a mag view on both breasts and an ultrasound on left breast. Diagnosed with Stage I cancer in right breast - treated with lumpectomy and radiation. Told left breast has a group of cysts and I should return in six months for another ultrasound. Since my six months is upon me I've been reading alot about cysts and I am not sure why I am being called back for another ultrasound - could they not have been cysts and maybe small growth that they want to recheck. Has anyone ever heard of a six month followup ultrasound for breast cysts. I thought cysts were relatively normal and cause no problems unless they are bothering you which I don't have a clue I even have these cysts.

    Hi -- I have had situations where I had to do do untrasounds for Ovarian cysts every six months. I think they just want to make sure everything is OK. I never heard of cancer growing in a form of a cyst - but maybe others can give you a better insight about this.

    If it was me, I would go for the check-ups. I am one to wish my apt. was a lab and I was been watched by Scientists 24/7. It's better to be careful and check, after a c dignosis.

    Since you've already had a breast cancer diagnosis
    I'm thinking they just want to be especially careful and thorough. They are probably just benign cysts, but I would be happy that they're being so thorough and having me come back in to double-check. Because my "normal" mammo missed small calcifications that turned out to be Stage IIIC invasive ductal carcinoma--I demand and receive MRIs, mammos and ultraasounds as often as I can get them. Better safe than sorry.

    follow up
    There are a couple of reasons to do a follow up. They may do more than one sometimes they follow up for a year. Once they consider a finding "stable" or "normal" for you then you go back to normal screening.

    1. They may be checking to see if they resolve. (go away)
    2. To make sure they are stable.
    3. An extra precaution because of your diagnosis.

    I doubt they would tell you it's a cyst if it was something else. Ultrasound is a pretty definitive diagnostic tool so they should be confident in the diagnosis.

    Renee....so sorry it wasnt detected. I am so thankful I went for msmo...occasionally put off. Sorry it wasnt caught for u.

    Thanks all...just didnt give this anyt thought until recentky since its upon me. Report six months ago said probable cysts so now that I am paying attention to the other brea st t I am now a little concerned its not cysts. We will see next week. Not getting too anxious....just inquiring why. Thanks for ur input.

    I would think your doctors are just being very thorough with you, which is great! I wish more doctors were like yours.
