I had the scan this morning. I will try to pick up the results on Wednesday from Medical Records. My doctor's appointment is not until next Tuesday, so I will pick up the results and be prepared for the appointment.

Unfortunately my port would not give blood again. It has only been 11 days since they used the activase. So they could not use the port for the scan. The port flushes fine, but will not give blood. The tip of the catheter is in the right atrium ( the upper heart chamber), so why it won't give blood I don't understand. How frustrating. That will be one of my questions when I see the doctor. What to do about the port?????????

I am hoping for good results from the scan. As always I do not have any symptoms, so am hoping that means good news. I know from Linda's experiences though, that does not always mean anything. I have never had any symptoms before either.

Just a thought: I have the regular port. They told me that they cannot use for scans because it might get clogged. Do you think yours might be affected this way????

re: port: after about two years, my "power port" also became very erratic. sometimes it would give blood, and others not. a nurse explained that there is some kind of build up that can and does happen, which clogs the port one way, kind of like a flap, so you can use the port for flushing, etc.,just not the other way around.

Port problems
Hi Ro, I too wish you a great scan report, I wanted to let you know that I am going in tomorrow for a repositioning of my port catheter. It was suppose to be where yours is but mine started giving us problems with getting a blood draw too. Well, the ct scan yesterday showed that the catheter moved up to my jugular vein and it has a couple of blood clots at the end of it. I will let you know how things come out. I hope it doesn't hurt much, I am so tired of being poked by needles. Good luck on Tuesday I will be thinking of you.

Regarding the port our bodies can make a fibrin sheath on the tip or end of the catheter. It becomes like a one way valve. Meaning it allows for infusion or flush but not for withdrawal of blood which has to be done prior to flushing or infusing to determine catheter patentcy. It the catheter of the port is plugged then there is a danger that when flushing or infusing with a pump under pressure that a piece of the fibrin sheath will break off and become like a clot or embolism which could block a vessel. It is common to have catheters build fibrin over time. The other thing that sometimes happens is that the tip of the catheter is positional meaning that the tip sucks up on the vessel wall when the nurse pulls or draws back with a sryinge. Sometimes if a person lies on their left side the catheter will move away from from the wall of the vessel. (if you know all of this just disregard...)

The results are very encouraging. The lymph nodes they were watching have been reduced by 50 percent. They are talking about mm in size now rather than cm. These are all in chest area. The abdomen and pelvis are all clear. So I was happy with the results and hope that the doctor agrees when I see him on Tuesday. Thanks for all the positive thoughts. In peace and caring.

Less than a cm is very good
Less than a cm is very good news - that's a threshold I look for in my reports. Nothing else to note in report just makes the news better. 'A weight' off your shoulders as you 'await' your doctor's eval! Enjoy your weekend!

I know this is a thread about Ro - so first of all, I am really pleased, Ro, that you had such a good scan result. I have been following your posts for a while now and hoping for good news.
But I also wanted to say - Helen, you have a new photo! And you look great - looks like you are on holiday somewhere lovely as well. More hair too - it looks really good. I am not brave enough to put up a photo - but I am always very interested in everyone else's. Especially when a new one appears - Linda, if you are reading this, I liked yours very much as well (the Victorian tea one)
