Who's crafty?

My local NOCC chapter is soliciting squares for one or more ovarian cancer quilts, to be raffled off at our September 5K. All proceeds will go to ovarian cancer research and awareness.

Any of you who might be interested in making a square, either for yourself or in memory of someone else, please let me know and I will get the info to you. No sewing required. You can fuse lace, appliques, etc to the fabric square with "Wonder Under." (Names must be embroidered, though - no paint or ink.) Photos transferred to fabric are encouraged, too.

The squares will be collected and professionally sewn together and quilted.

You can also write a note about your square, or the person you made it for. Those will all be bound into a "book" and given with the quilt(s).

I plan to make squares in memory of Linda Dorion, Jayne Armstrong and of course, Nancy Kavleski. I invite any of you artistic types to help out with this, anything from design suggestions to totally doing the whole square.

    Dear Carlene

Could you post the address and the deadline for the submission of the quilt square? And the size of the square, too. I would LOVE to donate...well, I have good intentions of donating. We'll see if I can get it together.

Yay! I am excited to have
Yay! I am excited to have generated some interest in this. My local NOCC ladies are going to be ubber impressed. I think we have til August to get them in. I have gotten myself in trouble here in the past for posting full names and addresses, so you will have to send me a message thru CSN (or my email, which is available in my profile) and I will send that to you.

Let me know if you want to make squares for yourself and/or one of our angel sisters, and which one. Although I think it would be fine if they had more than one square each. Lord knows, they each deserve a whole quilt to themselves.

I have cut and pasted the "rules" below....any more questions, just ask.

You are encouraged to personalize your square with fabric scraps, photo-transfer to fabric, and other mementos (buttons, pins, beads, and embroidery) that are significant to you as a survivor of ovarian cancer. A square may be also submitted in memory/honor of a loved one. Feel free to add any names in embroidery only. Please do not use ink to write on the quilt block regardless if permanent or fabric pens. You may make as many squares as you want. If we get more than enough squares for one quilt, we will make a second quilt.

The guidelines for squares should be submitted as outlined below:

    1. Finished square must be either 6”x6” or 12”x12”. (Please no other sizes)

    2. Please press all seams and the finished square.

    3. Cotton fabric is best however; you may incorporate other fabric (lace, etc) into the square as appliquéd designs.

    4. Use Pellon Wonder-Under if you want to fuse the design prior to sewing the square.

    5. Submit as many squares as you want.

    6. You can use any color fabric....it does not have to be Teal.

    7. JoAnn's has a great selection of fabric. You purchase a "fat quarter" of your choice of fabric...most fat quarters only cost about 1.50 to 3.00. You

can also purchase fabric off the bolts.....the cost will be minimal.

    8. Make sure you label your quilt block with a piece of paper (pinned to your block) with your name, phone number, city/state and a short paragraph

of the significant meaning of your square. I want to type up everyone's story of their block to be included with the quilt so the new owner can read

everyone's story about their quilt block. If you want to submit your block anonymously that is ok.

PS....I do not know how much the raffle tickets will be, but I will find out and get back to everyone.

    Can do!
Turns out my hobby is quilting. I will be sending lots of blocks your way....I sent you a message via FB for the address. Plus I have a fancy embrod. machine begging to do some stitching....I am so excited I can hardly contain myself.

Ladies: Jo-Ann Fabrics has a block of the month quilt. Buy one month, the fabric is pre-cut and all you have to do is a straight line seam!

    Mary....I responded via FB,
Mary....I responded via FB, before I saw that you had posted here, as well.

Would you be willing to embroider everyone's blocks, then send them back to us? I can help with the cost of postage.

I told Meghan, Linda Dorion's daughter, that I would make a square for her mom, but I asked her to write the paragraph. If you want to make Linda's square, that would be great.

You and I joined the same month, so I know that you remember Bonnie and Saundra and the others. Memorial squares for them would be super!

Jayne Armstrong loved animals - horses, her dog Blue Belle, and her cat Tonto. You could skim thru her blog (www.shoppingkharma.blogspot.com) to get a feel for Jayne, and Sarah Feather's blog (www.thecarcinista.com) for hers. They were both very special, very inspirtional women and fought long, hard battles with this awful disease.

I would like to make Nancy's myself, but if you would embroider her name on it, I would be oh so grateful. I am also going to do one for Lisa13Q's mom, and she is going to write the "story" behind the block. Maybe I will get around to doing one that represents me, but I'm doing the memorial squares first.

This will be so awesome! I will send you my home address and you can send the squares to me. I will hand deliver them to the NOCC volunteer in charge of this project, whose name is Becky. And I will have photos of the finished quilt(s), because I plan to do the 5K again this year, God willing.

I can hardly wait to see the square you design/make for yourself, Mary. I know it will be stunning!

I sent Becky an email and said I thought I could get 6 or 8 squares from my cyber sisters. She will be blown away when I tell her that we are going to be sending many more than that.

    Printing photos on fabric
Here is the link to a great tutorial on how to transfer photos to fabric. I am going to buy some Bubble Jet Set 2000 and try this.

The "rules" said no paint -
The "rules" said no paint - even specialty fabric paint. Just fabric (lace is ok), attached with Wonder Under and/or appliqued. Names etc have to be embroidered.
