Aromisin

I was wondering if anyone else saw the news about Aromisin. They are saying it's a "new" drug that is being praised for it's great results with relatively no side effects.

I was on it and did have bone pain. Just wondering why they are reporting that it's new. My daughter called me all excited that I should try it and I had to tell her that I was already on it.

Thanks,
Wanda

Yes, the new part is that
Yes, the new part is that aromasin can reduce the risk of ever developing cancer in high risk women by as much as 65%. Big news and I am happy that my only sister who has not had breast cancer took it preventively for 5 years.

    Thanks for clearing that up
Thanks ladies for responding. Now I understand. I did read more after I posted. That is a great thing for prevention!
Sometimes the news isn't always clear and I had to explain that to my daughter.
    Thanks again,

I was wondering that, too. I
I was wondering that, too. I am currently taking tamoxifen. I was considering calling my oncologist's office to see if I should be switching meds! Looks like Aromisin still causes hot flashes though.

You can't take aromotase inhibitors if you have functioning ovaries. If you are post-menapausal, then you can take either tamoxifen or aromasin. If you are pre-menapausal, you can only take tamoxifen. Aromasin and the other aromatase inhibitors reduce the estrogen levels in the body produced by body fat and the andreal glands. Tamoxifen works differently by blocking the estrogen receptors in the cancer cells. Aromasin is 2 X as effective as tamoxifen. And yes, it definately causes hot flashes. It is also known for causing joint inflamation too. I didn't find either too bothersome after I discovered I was vitamin D3 deficient, but I understand that some folks are more genetically likely to experience a high level of joint pain. They would be better off with Tamoxifen. After all, the point of taking the medicine is increase ones' life span, not ruin every hour of it.

New and hopeless,I want to stop all AI"s
Hi, I'm new again. I was on here about six yrs.a go when arimidex was wreaking havoc with my life in so far as bone pain and such a multitude of other side effects. I was put on aromasin then and again had the same side effects but at a more bearable level and also the pain clinic helped me with pain meds that were and are pretty heavy duty and they did take care of the pain but as time went by 6 yrs. they were able to reduce the pain meds but I needed a double knee replacement that I believe was the result of the aromasin. I read a few ,2, articles in the american journal of oncology where they attested this was a possibility because it could affect the cartiledge in your knees. I went off the aromasin then too, July last year, because the hot flashes were so unbearable and were constant, I really, really wanted to shoot myself. I felt so hopeless living that way. I told my oncologist who said i could switch to fulvestrant injections once a month which I started in Sept. after the knee replacements and rehab. for them. Well, I am now at a point where these injections are causing terrible hot flashes again and I see her next Wed. and I want to stop these as well. But then am I am setting myself up probably for another reocurrance, I've had breast cancer 3x's now. I feel like I might actually be killing myself if I do. Had a PET scan and sonogram on this past Fri. due to her feeling a lymph node that was somewhat enlarged in my neck. I am so very sick and tired of this. The hot flashes Fri. night were every 2 hrs. leaving me feeling crazy in my head as well as sweating like a house on fire. My brain becomes on fire too. Last night was better. Please give me some hope here.
