Try spicy food - the hotter
Try spicy food - the hotter the better! I became addicted to fresh salsa. I know it sounds weird - but it worked for me.0 -
Hi Nancy!
I found that when I ate pinto beans, I could somewhat taste what they should taste like. And I agree with the spicy food.
What was the most difficult was not being able to taste chocolate...I LOVE chocolate.
Thank God taste buds come back once the Chemo ends.
Hugs,

Hi Nancy,
I have problems with my food not tasting the same and I have read some where on the internet to use plastic silverware and it really help. So now when I go out to a resturant I ask for plastic silverware and if they don't have any I have some in my compartment in my car. Hey, lol, if I am going to pay for a meal I want to be able to taste it without the metal taste.

asparagus rolls
So like Kiki3 I felt like I had a burnt tongue. I love asparagus so I roll up freshly steamed asparagus into wheat bread. Or the can variety is nice too - just strain it and place in the fridge for a bit to get rid of any metallic taste.
Also, water was like wallpaper paste so I started drinking Natural Sierra Mist a couple of times a day to keep the fluids up and give a nice taste.
Apples and Oranges tasted rotten.
McDonalds, In N Out - they worked wonders too - yummo!
Good luck!

Book's suggestions
Hi - Sorry to hear about this side effect as I know how important it is to eat during treatments. But, its not over! I bought this great book "Cancer-fighting Kitchen" where they make suggestions for ALL side effects! they even tell you what foods are good to eat during side effects and why they are good for you (some are even good for colon). It's a great book.
OK, for this side effect they recommend you add the following things to increase your taste level: Lemon, Organic Maple syrup, Sea Salt, Extra virgin Olive Oil. It works! Apparently these do something to bring out the flavors. You don't add all these at once of course, you pick and choose according to your taste.
Also, everyone is different with foods so you may want to try many different things until you can finally taste them. Like for me it was mango. So I had them often.
Good luck! The bad taste goes away.0 -

because I truly love my food. The bad taste was awful. I'm afraid for me--it was trial and error all the way. Something that might look and smell delicious, tasted horrible. Some of my very favorites were inedible for me. It really made me mad!
I did the best on very bland things--white bread and peanut butter (which I never normally eat), plain scrambled eggs, Cheerios with skim milk. Very boring diet, but it's very temporary. I also had problems with food smells--especially food that was cooking. I remember one night, my saint of a husband was preparing something for his dinner on the stove top and the smell grossed me out so bad--he had to run outside with the frying pan!
Hope you find some things that work for you.

I couldn't do the spicy
I couldn't do the spicy foods because I also had bad heartburn with chemo. So the bland foods worked better for me...plain noodles, instant mashed potatoes, plain rice, baked potatoes. It changed with each treatment. In my chemo class they recommended carnation instant breakfast, the vanilla flavor worked best for me. And stone fruits were also really good. There were certainly times when I ate food even though it didn't taste right, just to get some calories and nutrition.
I hope this helps.

I finally got my menu downpoplolly said:Bio--plastic utensils
Bio--plastic utensils helps--I discovered that nothing tasted good. The texture of the food also made a difference to me. I ate things like scrambled eggs, half a peanut butter sandwich. They said to avoid hot foods and spicy foods.
I finally got my menu down for the week following each chemo dose. Corn with salt, potatoes with sour creme, yogurt, hard fried egg. By second week I added more things, by third it was better. Then started whole thing all over again.
Water tasted horrid. I put a little red koolaid in my water and was able to drink that.
Once I realized that things were just going to taste horrid it was easier to just eat. I knew it would not be forever and one day I would be tasting again.
The biggest bummer was that my 44th birthday was just 2 days after my 4th chemo. My daughter and her friend made me a cake shaped like a heart. They frosted it pink. It tasted horrible but I ate it anyway, it made her so happy.0 -

Milkshakes, smoothies, anything through a straw, but ice cream was my favorite.
Also scrambled eggs. Nothing really tasted good, these things just didn't taste as bad.

I used the biotene also,
I used the biotene also, which helped combat mouth sores, but i still had the taste. For a while i lived on white cheddar popcorn and lipton citrus green tea. And garlic bread, too. Forego healthy eating for this short period of time & just eat what you can taste & what makes you feel good
*hugs*

Thanks for all of your very helpful suggestions and empathy! I am thrilled and consider myself blessed because this only lasted about two days. I am sure it will happen next chemo though. You guys are right about the plastic ware! I didn't realize something so simple could be so helpful.

Taste... Uugggh!
These are the things that helped me - somewhat.
During infusion.. Nurses gave me lemonheads to suck on;
I'm not much of a water drinker, however - the wonderful folks on this site told me to hydrate... So, I drank crystal lite in my water all day, everyday (it truly helped the taste). Plain water was awful;
I too kept Biotene toothpaste, mouthwash, gum & mouth sorry.
McDonald's fish sandwiches and anything with lots of spices/flavors.0
