A bit worse for wear, but I'm back
This is the first time I've logged on since then, so here's the latest. On Monday I finished seven weeks of rads and chemo at Johns Hopkins, and am home recuperating. I have to say that this treatment was a walk in the park compared to what I went through three years ago: no feeding tube, no pain, very little fatigue. I tell you true: The treatments that we head & neck patients and survivors have been subjected to will really separate the men from the boys, or the women from the girls, or whatever comparison you want to make.
I did have my old friend Cisplatin again, though this time, Big Cis had a friend: Etoposide, which removed every hair on my head but left my beard and other body hair alone. So now I look like Mr. Clean, or maybe Uncle Fester.
It's way too early for the docs to make even an educated guess as to my prognosis. I had a CT scan after five weeks of treatment, a point at which the docs say that 80 percent of the scans show no change in tumor size. I was in the 20 percent group: My tumor and two bum lymph nodes showed some shrinkage, which of course is a good thing.
On June 20 I go back for another CT scan, which will be useless for evaluating how effective my treatment was. However, the chemo doc will use it to determine whether I need any further chemo. (I sure hope not.)
The docs tell me it will take three months to determine how effective the overall treatment was, so in late August I go back for a CT scan. That's the important one.
One other thing. The doctors and the nurses have been nothing short of amazed at how well I weathered the treatment. At the outset they told me the radiation probably would burn my esophagus and I'd have problems swallowing anything other than soft food. That didn't happen. They also told me I'd probably have a bad cough -- didn't happen -- and that I'd be terribly, terribly fatigued. Granted, I'm not at the top of my game, but I'm not fatigued like I was the last time around. (I actually roto-tilled the garden today, though I had to take really frequent breaks.)
While the docs and nurses were at a loss to explain it, I'm not. I've told everyone that the reason I've done so well is due to the power of prayer -- not my prayers so much as the prayers of the good people who've been praying for me. I know there are a number of people here who remembered me in their prayers, and there's no way I can thank them enough for that.
Hang in there, y'all. You're survivors, because if you can survive H&N treatment, you can survive anything.

Great news
Glad you made it through with minimal problems. One never does get used to it but I do think the second time around may not be as scary as the first...probably wrong on that.
Funny about your hair loss. Mine was the exact reverse; woke up one morning and every hair in my beard was gone except that directly in line with my spine; I looked like I had a turkey beard and I never did find the lost hairs in my bed. Never lost head or eyebrows.
H&N folks do become a different but stronger beed I believe.0 -

Yes, there was just a recent post that some of us "old timers" were wondering about you. Your story of your second round of treatment is amazing to read. It depicts the same strength that was always a theme every time you put fingers to keys. I understand that your most recent treatment folks were amazed at how you moved through radiation and chemo. I am sure that it is rare that anyone undergoing cancer treatment would view it as a "walk in the park". Only those who have undergone H&N cancer would hold this view. Jim, I am sending prayer, good energy, the force, whatever it takes, your way. So grateful you took the time to share with us,

I'm here just about everyday, but don't chime in very often. I concur...the power of prayer is amazing. Power in numbers is powerful support too.
Best to you and all here.

Hi
Jim,
I prayed for you as soon as I read this post. I have surgery/start treatment very soon and am ready to get it started. I am praying that I have the same experience that you had with it. I just keep saying to myself that every morning when my feet hit the floor, I hope to hear the devil say "Damn, he is up again". I pray this for you too, keep up the good fight.

Jim,
Glad to see you back! Even more happy to see you did so well through your latest fight. I've always thought of you as one of the toughest SOB's on this site. You'll kick this one's butt this time too!

Jim, so glad that you communicated with us...I agree the power of prayer is great.
Hang in there tough one, we're not done with you yet.
Best Always,
John
I've been thinking about you.
I'll tell you from the caregivers seat, I totally believe you went through this treatment easier than the head/neck protocol. It looked really tough to me and at the time, everyone is just taking whatever comes up and dealing but in retrospect, it was a rough treatment.
Keep up the good work. We'll be looking forward to your report after the next scan.

Jim, glad you checked in. We all have been thinking of you. I am relieved to hear that the treatment was not nearly as rough as last time. I pray that you have kicked this thing square in the keister and sent it packing.
Blessings,

God is with you Jim
Jim, It was nice to read your post and hear you did well with your chemo and radiation. I am a caregiver and my wife, Connie has fought the devil named cancer. She and I both know the power of prayer as she has experienced miracles with her recovery. I hate to hear that you are having to fight the beast a second time but find comfort that God is by your side. As you know cancer is a rough road, constantly drawing blood, tests, appointments, chemo, radiation etc. but anything is possible with God! Good luck on your next scan. We will be praying for you, Homer & Connie0 -
