Pneumonia/ Abdominal Inflammation

My Mom is still in the hospital. I had posted in another thread that I have been reporting to Oncology nurse last week about her fever / cough. We ended up in the ER Saturday night for pneumonia. She hasn't been eating well at all, very nauseated for some reason which is very unusual - her last chemo was over 2 weeks ago. Now the Dr ordered a CT on her abdomin, and there is inflammation there. She is in radiology right now seeing if they can drain and culture the fluid that is there. The Dr thinks it may have been a polyp rupture (diverticulitous). They are also putting in a pick line because she is getting very malnutritioned because she can't eat anything.

I really hope to know soon what is going on. She was very very weak when I brought her Saturday. Her magnesium, potassium and sodium are all very low. She had improved on Monday but the past two days not so much. :(

She really needs a break! :(

I am praying that your mom gets a break, I know how difficult this must be. You certainly are"there for" your mom. She must be so proud of you. I have two daughters and I know they will be there for me too. I don't know what the future is for my diagnosis(endometrial cancer), but I know how lucky I am two have such a loving family, and my faith which never fails to amaze me is always holding me up. Good luck!

Edie sorry to hear about your Mom
Her having pneumonia is bad enough, but now the abdominal inflammation adds more to the problem. She will probably need different antibiotics for each infection. The multiple anitbiotics can be hard on the body, too. Many times people end up with diarrhea from the multiple antibiotics. Your Mom does not need that added to her weakness.

Glad she is getting a PICC line to get the antibiotics and they can also use it to draw blood which will save her multiple sticks. Wishing your Mom added strength every day.

I know this has to be hard for you abd your Mom. Hang in there and take one day at a time. You and your Mom remain in my prayers. In peace and caring.

    Your Mom
How is your Mom doing now? I hope that her physicans have diagnosed the root cause of her inflammation in her abdominal area. I don't know how long ago she had hysterectomy but it could be a complication of the surgery. Greek yogurt can help maintain the normal bacteria and flora in her gastro-intestinal track.

    Mom Update
    Hi Lori,

They think that my Mom is having a diverticulitis episode. The CT showed inflammation in her abdomen. They tried to drain the abscess in radiology but one of the areas was too complicated. To make matters worse, they now think that she has a bladder infection as well. The nurse will come in soon as they need to do a clean specimen to make sure that it's really in the bladder, so they are doing it with catheter. I am really worried that one of the abscess might have abscessed to the bladder. This happened to my hubby two years ago, and he had to have colon resection and a temporary colostomy while it healed. It doesn't make sense that she has been running this fever for two weeks now. :( She really needs a break..

She can't eat anything at all, she's very nauseated. They have her on nutrition right now.
