Ablation on the liver twice, Anyone? microwave thermal or laser?

My husband has a four spots on his liver all around a centimeter. Except for one near his hepatic artery which is stable from 2009 (fingers crossed DEAD)We just emailed someone from the mayo clinic. The doctor said they could procede with the procedure if it wasn't too painful or disruptive to his daily life style. Well I hope it's not. Last time he had ablation it was during surgery because they couldn't remove it all.

Have any of you had thermal ablation usinging laser or microwave technologies? Who did it a radiologist or a surgeon?

He will still have to get chemo, but chemo every week is wearing on him.

On the discovery show they had a cancer special and this guy had colon cancer that spread to his liver. He has had 6 surgeries and the cancer is still there, but for the last four years Avastin alone has kept it stable. Wouldn't that be nice? Only Avastin every three weeks.

I have mentioned the ablation procedure to our oncologigist and he said SPOT WELDING isn't the answer. And Chris's liver surgeon doesn't seem eager to move on it either.

Chris will get a PET in July to make sure it hasn't spread. Then we will probably proceed, but would like to hear if any of you have had an experience with this.

    Hi Erin:
I don't have an answer for you, no experience with it.

There is a Webinar on 5/16 from 8 to 9 p.m. EST. Go to the Fight Colorectal Cancer site and you can register, costs nothing, it is telephone and web. The topic is Treating Liver Metastasis. It apears they will be discussing liver directed therapies. You can submit questions.

This webinar might be of great assistance to you in making a decision and understanding stuff.

I have participated in these webinars in the past and it is very easy to participate, costs nothing and offers valuable information.

    Hope this helps.

    Take care - Tina

    My Guy at Sloan
    Stephen B. Solomon, MD
    Chief, Interventional Radiology Service
"I am an interventional radiologist, a physician who uses x-ray, CT, ultrasound, and MR images to perform procedures less invasively. I am Chief of the Interventional Radiology Service in the Department of Radiology and also director of Memorial Sloan-Kettering's new Center for Image-Guided Intervention (CIGI). At CIGI, multiple imaging modalities and multiple disciplines will be combined to develop and apply new image-guided cancer therapies."

He did three RFA's to my lung(s) over the past 3-4 years. It was very easy and relatively painless. I don't know if it had to do with it being in the lungs or not.
I wish you and your husband the best.
