An update on my Father

Your Dad is actually doing very good for what he has been through so far. I am glad to hear that he is up and around and going outside, a huge plus. I hope to hear that he takes some walks around the area with you at his side.

Right now, he will go through the healing stage for a period of time. He shouldn't receive any radiation until his incisions heal up, roughly 6 weeks. He is unable to eat much at the moment because of the Surgery. The inside of his throat is swollen and the passageway is narrow, making swallowing a bit more difficult. As the swelling goes down, he will be able to eat larger bites/ amounts. I too had 3 drain tubes after my Radical Neck Disection and it was roughly 2 weeks before the staples were removed along with the drains.

He may be getting fitted for the Mask in roughly 2-3 weeks and there will be a scan done to allow the Phyicist and Radiation Oncologist to plan the angles of the Radiation beams to attack the area were the cancer was located.

My father is doing pretty well. After he got home from the surgery he couldnt eat anything past the consistency of tomatoe soup or pudding. He has been advancing ever since. I have kept him filled up on Glucerna and Juven to keep the required nutrients in his body that has been lacking. He weighed 203 the day of surgery and 3 days after surgery he weighed 185. Tonight when I weighed him he weighed 190 so he is putting some weight back on which is good. I have been trying to keep him stocked up on Glucerna and Juven so his immune system gets built up in order to take the radiation and chemo with minimizing effects. I know it will probably affect him greatly, but every little thing in my opinion helps. All of the research that I have done points to the best health possible and that is what I am trying to do.
He still stays active, still can't keep him inside to rest. I have insisted on mowing and weed eating his lawn for him, along with tending to his massive garden. He is not the type of person that wants anyone to do anything for him, no matter what his problems. He is always the one helping everyone else.
A life changing event for anyone, no matter how massive or miniscule, makes a person change their outlook on life and their priorities. That, my friends, is what has unexpectedly happened to me and I am going to cherish every moment I have with my one and only father.
I will keep you updated as to how his future treatments go.
