Little Neulasta survey, how many hours or days.....

How many hours or days did it take for you to experience the bone and joint pain? I have heard everything from 8 hours to 3 days, so I am just wondering what the norm is. I am getting the shot on Sunday morning and plan to go to church with my family if I am up to it.

Second, how severe was your pain? I realize everyone has a different pain threshhold, but did you need nothing for the pain? Were you able to control it with Tylenol/Motrin or did you need the "big guns" for pain?

Thanks for your help and advice!

    I had Nasty Neulasta after
I had Nasty Neulasta after each chemo round (I had 8.) Neulasta was not nice for me. Within 8 or so hours, I would be in excruciating pain. It got so bad that I had to take oxycodone for it. It basically sent me to bed for 3 or 4 days each round! That is my experience, it does not mean that it will be yours. We are all different, thank God! I actually met a woman the other day at radiation and she said that neulasta was the best thing that ever happened to her. She said it gave her so much energy that she was able to go hiking! I said, "Are we talking about the same medication?" But yes, we were. Just goes to show that we all react so differently! I wish you the best of luck with the injections.

    No Pain at all
I had no pain at all from the 4 Neulasta shots I had after my 4 A/C's (Didn't have shots ith the 12 Taxol though). The only SE I had from the Shots was 2 hrs almost to minute after I had been given the injection I would go to sleep for 2 hrs and wake up a if nothing had happened.

I know that's not the common reaction people have but then we are all different so our bodies react differently.

    Hiking???
I gave myself the shot & within a couple of hours... all I could was 'dream' of hiking, lol. I believe the shot made me tired - and I had leg pains (not too bad), during my four A/C treatments. However, when I started the Taxol - it was different. When I gave myself the shot - it would wipe me out even more than with the A/C. And the pains would be in my back and mostly in legs and sometimes my wrist would hurt. I can't stand pain pills - but after suffering through the first treatment, I purchased exedrin back & body aches pills. They calmed down the pain a lot. So when it was time for my second treatment and thereafter - I took exedrin a half hour before the shot and every 4-6 hrs after for at least three or four days. This made a huge difference and taught me the value of a pain pill. Oh, and on some nights, I took exedrin PM and I was able to get a good nights sleep without complaining about the pain.

You might be one of the lucky ones to never experience any of this. I consider myself very lucky, because I felt as though my little complaints were extremely minimal - compared to many on this site.

Best of luck to you as you go forth.

HMM - Never thought about it
HMM - Never thought about it but perhaps the Neulasta had a similar efect on me. I had them with the 4 A/C and never felt bad at all - well 2 days after infusion for 2 days I'd get tired easier but napping/resting worked to pep back up - I kept doing anything/everything I always did - Even drove my first Powder Puff Mud Bog (at 63 years young - did better than Son did and made some money - got 2nd -LOL) 2 days after 2nd infusion. I kept the horses worked and cared for, continued giving lessons and kept yard mowed with no problem at all. I didn't have Neulasta with the 12 Taxol though and it hit like sledge hammer - walking from the couch to the bathroom worse than bucking hay for a whole day - complete and utter exhaustion that never got better until a week after the last infusion (and the day I started Rads) i finally started feeling almost 'alive' again and just kept feeling better throughtout Rads.

    We are each so unique!

    Neulasta not bad for me
I always had my Neulasta-shot appointment very late in the day, so didn't experience any pain that day, but would wake up the next morning with some moderate bone pain in my legs only, that would last for a couple of days.

Having read some of the comments here on this board, I was TERRIFIED of the Neulasta, but I can honestly say it wasn't bad at all. I don't even think I ever took anything for it -- maybe a Motrin or Tylenol a few times, but I definitely didn't need any prescription pain meds. I'm not sure my legs would have been up for hiking (yowza!) for a couple of days, but I had no trouble moving around going about my regular day.

    Not many aches
I didn't have many aches or pains, but when I did they were bad! It usually hit me the day after the shot. I took a daily claritin through my entire chemo and that really helped to take the edge off of the aches. I also took ibuprofen daily.

Usually, the evening after the shot
I felt like I had a really bad flu with the bone and joint aches and pains. It was really hard to get comfortable on the couch--I just kept shifting positions, getting up, walking around, trying to sit, lie down, whatever. I really hate taking the narc. pain meds, so I took a couple of Ibuprophens. The pain usually only lasted a couple of days and then disappeared.

Everyone is different--you may be just fine. Good luck to you.

    If you are getting your
If you are getting your injection on Sunday, church should pose no problem for you! I was one of those who had a severe reaction to the Neulasta~ all 206 bones in my body started aching in about 36 hours of the shot~ I needed help to get out of bed~ actually, Reggie had to help me to even raise my upper body so that I could sit up in bed! I do not have a caring oncologist; when I mentioned my severe pain to him, he poo-pooed the whole notion saying MOST ppl have mild pain...he gave me no suggestions and I toughed it out for about 3 days each time I had the shot. Sigh....

I hope YOU are the one my oncologist thinks we all are!!

I had chemo on Tuesday and Neulasta shot on Wednesday. I had very little if any pain from the shot. By Friday I had joint pain and started sleeping 12 hours at one time. By Sunday night I was back to "normal". It's not just a tired feeling it's a body feeling exhausted. Wishing you well.

Strong pain but not for long
    Nancy,

I got bad pain from the Neulasta shot but it only lasted a day or two. My doctor gave me oxycodone to take during the worst times. It helped a lot. If you do turn out to be one of the people who get bad pain, please talk to your doctor about it. Mine was happy to help.

    I take claritin
starting the day of the Neulasta and continuing for about 10 days. I have not had any pain, don;t know if it;s because of the claritin or I'm just lucky.

However, I do sleep need to sleep around 15 hours a day (not kidding!) for about 3 days after the chemo and shot - complete and utter exhaustion. Of course it's difficult to know if that's due to the chemo or the Neulasta.

My advice FWIW is to REST as neeeded. My first FEC I tried to push myself and do too much afterwards and ended up feeling awful...the second one I just dropped everything and basically did not move except from couch to bed to lounge chair for 3 days....and it was much easier.

    wishing you the best,

Exhausting Journey -- indeed .. What helped with
my severe bone aches .. was 'Beneadryl'. I started with Beneadryl a few hours after my shot .. helped with the pain and aches.

    Good luck to all.

    No pain
I gave myself the shot the day after chemo and didn't have any problems, but I was taking Claritin for my springtime allergies, so maybe that had some effect.

    Good luck,

    From what I remember...
I took the shot on Friday and at first, it wasn't until Sunday evening that I would really start to feel it. After awhile though, it seemed to start on Saturdays. I went through chemo 2 years ago though, so the memory of it may be vague.

It didn't matter what I took to try to counter-act it, I still had the pain.
