In my case
I think surgeons are specific to certain areas and mine was a stomach and chest guy with 95% of his business was working on breast cancer. I think it was a good deal in my case to go to someone who's majority of work was on the breast cancers.
I never saw him again after the drains taken out Gp and Cancer Clinic watched over me.

I last saw my breast surgeon about a month ago. Three weeks after my double mastectomy, he said I will need to see you again in six months. His nurse Julie then told me I'd be seeing him for a least a couple of years and I can rotate them around my Oncologist appointments. So every three months I'd be seeing one of them. Now after next month throw in my Rad Onc. and I may as well get a room up at the hospital.
Not sure why I have to go, but come September if we are still discussing this I'll ask. LOL

We're all different!
For me - the only 2 Drs that do breast exams on the remaining breast are my Surgeon (he never wants to see me again, roughly 1 1/2 yr post surgery as long as I have 6 mth appt with my PA) and my PA (had her for 15 years and she's always there for me). Rads Dr 'dumped' me less that a year post TX. I see my Chemo Dr 6 mths past the last time (July) I saw him so don't know what he'll say then as to rather he want's to see me anymore. I saw my Surgeon (and/or his PA) quite a few times post surgery because of large seroma.
HMMM! I haven't been to a GYN specialist since sons were born over 30 years ago. I do have my annual Paps with my PA and I've never had any issues - well other than 2 C'sections those MANY years ago.

Denise I went to
an oncology surgeon (who specialized in breast cancer) 10 days post op to have drains removed. I then went back 3 months and 6 months later. I see him again in June for the 1 year follow up. I will have an xray and blood work done a week before I see him.

My surgeon, medical oncologist, and radiation oncologist all share many patients and work very closely together. I saw all of them regularly until I was a full year out of treatment. At that time, they told me their policy is for me to continue to see 2 doctors, not 3 -- but WHICH 2 doctors "feels right" varies from patient to patient.
Since I'm on Tamoxifen, sticking with my medical oncologist for the next 5 years is mandatory. While I liked my radiation oncologist very much, I just didn't build up the same close relationship with him that I did with my surgeon and medical oncologist, so it made sense for me to "dump" the radiation oncologist and stick with my surgeon and medical oncologist.
I now see my surgeon annually, and my medical oncologist every 3 months.
Clarification: I'm just talking about my "cancer doctors" here -- of course, I continue to see my PCP, gynecologist, dermatologist, veterinarian, proctologist....

I see my surgeon after every mammo
and I guess I will for a while yet since I'm one & a half yrs post surgery. He's great, and very nice looking, too! But really great, compassionate, listens. I believe him and that what he tells me is true. So, there you go!
I have chosen to see a Nurse Practitioner at the Onc's office, she's so much better than the doc and I gave up my rads guy.
Like Traci, I still see the GYN, PCP, Veterinarian and my Rheumotologist. Twice a year I make 4 to 5 appts in one day, starting at the dentist. It's thrilling to be down to twice a year!

My surgeons title is trauma, general and breast surgery. That is why I call him my breast surgeon. He is the 3rd doctor I have been seeing in that practice since I was 20 with benign tumors.AND would you believe after surgeries(and even this cancer one 1 1/2 years ago) I can't see a scar. This was a total of 7 tumors and 1 cyst through the years.
I've heard that some women who had breast surgeries have scars everywhere. My sister in law was chopped up bad.Her tumors were benign but scars everyhere.4 tumors and a scar for every one.She was very skinny and I think that is stupid to be chopped up that bad.
I am happy with the results of my surgeries and my breast surgeons skill.

has done surgery on my 2 times (NO breast) so I assumed when he told me I NEEDEd surgery he would be my MAN....but he referred me to general surgeon. (MY husband had used him 2 x)
Thanks to him (GYNO) i have my now 19 yr old. MY previous gyno told my husband and mom I WOULD never have a 2nd child! wrong...changed Drs and presto!
I MUST say you can't even tell I had surgery/breast as far as scares ( Lop sided yes) but all Dr who see me impressed with lack of scars. WHen I GO for my Mammo and they put those tags on scars etc..they have to ask me where!
Denise
