Yeah Linda...can you tell me more about your situation?
My Mom went on avastin last week as her cancer had spread.....I figured it was a last ditch effort...is this a 2nd line treatment for you? have you tried other chemos and not done so well? Is there actually some hope for my mother?0 -

Lisa, 20 years ago I went through what all these ladies are going through. Surgery and debulking. They said it was Stage 1C. Cancer was contained in both ovaries however it was in the fluid. I took one radiation treatment and then chemo pills for 6 months. Went for 17 years NED. In 2008, it returned. Had surgery, they couldn't get it all due to it being wrapped around three main arteries but it was from the old cancer. Did the taxol/carbo thing and when I completed, I was NED for all of 2009. 2010 (here we go again)..this time I took Doxil. Doxil got most of the spots however there was one on the liver that did not respond very well to the doxil. I took a 2 month break (I got shingles) and when they looked at it after the break...it had grown and I then had another spot up by my esophagus.
My doctor then wanted me to do Gemzar and Avastin. Insurance company didn't want to pay for both of the agents. Never did get the approval of the Gemzar to be taken along with the Avastin. So I took the Avastin alone. When I had my PET/Scan done, I was afraid that it wouldn't have helped me because everything I read says that the Avastin works better with another agent. The doctor kept trying to assure me that he had other patients just on Avastin alone and things were going good. Well I guess that is one of those cases where I am glad that maybe all the obstacles were there for a reason and I was just suppose to get the Avastin alone.
My doctor's assistant took me into the office and said she had good news. I couldn't believe it. She said it was killing the cancer cells from the inside out. I jumped up and started dancing and told her I was doing the "happy dance". She jumped up with me and we were dancing in the office.
Lisa, I want you to know that when I went to the doctor on my previous visit. My daughter-in-law had asked if this was all doom and gloom. That is when he was putting me on the Avastin. He turned and said NO way. We have lots of things we can try. So I think your mom still has options and hope.
You, my friend, are one beautiful daughter.

I am so happy for you ! My Dr has me on Avastin alone and I don't think it will be the cure for ovca but it is taking them in a direction for treatment, the more tools they have the better.
