My moms final CT results---more s*it to deal with

in Ovarian Cancer #1
My mom completed 6 mos of carbo/taxol last month. As many folks on this board recall, she has had quite the ovarian cancer journey. Her ca-125 numbers had been dropping well. Last reading was 16. The CT result declared her NED. That is the good news. The bad news is that they have detected a growing aortic aneurysm. She has been referred to a cardiologist at the end of the month. Can she not catch a break or what?.. So any celebrating over the CA has been wiped out by fear that her aneurysm will rupture and she will die at any moment. My poor mom. Anxiety has been a big part of this whole ordeal for her and now this. She is not a great surgical candidate either based on the respiratory complications she encountered after her colostomy surgery. So no great breath of fresh air for me either. We go on...

    Aaaww Wendy, sometimes it seems as though this hell never ends. God it seems along time to wait under the circumstances, there surely must be something that they can do, lat is all know the outcome, (( hugs)) Liz xxx

    Catching a break? I sure hear you. Just seems that some of us get more than others.

    I hope that things improve for your Mom so that she can be 'surgery approved'. They now have a wonderful procedure to repair these aneurysms, unfortunately much too late for my Dad who passed away of an undetected ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm in 1994.

    By the way, this can be hereditary. My Dad's brother also had one, but it was caught in time and repaired. So, might not be a bad idea for you and any siblings to mention that to your physicians in the future.

    I'll be sending lots of prayers your way, Wendy, and hugs to you and your Mom. Hoping for a break for all of you.

    Wendy....my husband has an arotic aneurysm, diagnosed about 5 or 6 years ago. They tend to grow slowly and he has his checked once a year. If it gets large enough, they will repair it. If your mom's is small, they will just monitor it and if it's large, they can fix it easily enough.

    Try not to stress too much over this new development. Unfortunately, the rest of our body doesn't stop having issues while we deal with cancer, and sometimes the day-to-day stuff mounts up and just makes us crazy. My last CT revealed a new hernia - a hiatial one - in addition to the large incisional hernia I already knew about. I feel just like you - will there ever be a time I don't have to schedule my life around tests and doctors' visits?

    Monika, I never new they were hereditary , my dad had one, he passed in 1997 I was 17. What with mum and dad things sure aren't looking great!!!! Lol. Oh well, cannot threat about it I guess!!!

    Thought on this new situation
    The NED news is wonderful! So happy to hear she has reached that milestone.

    I hope the doctor is making sure that your mom's blood pressure is low. Anything to keep the blood pressure down is going to be good (avoiding salty food). That would include not lifting anything heavy (which would be more than five pounds or about 2 kg). If she has anti-anxiety medicine, she should take it.

    The good news is that the condition was discovered as there are plenty of people walking around with an aneurysm who don't know it. You didn't say how large the aneurysm was and aneurysms can get pretty big before they rupture so let's be glad that she's on her way to the cardiologist's office sooner rather than later.

    Had she not had OVCA, would the aneurysm been discovered at all? Ask the cardiologist about familial/hereditary tendencies for aortic aneurysms.

    Boy Wendy.... I wished I had some great words of wisdom. Your mom deserves a break. A friend of mine had an aneurysm and they watched it for quite a while before they actually did surgery. I understand about the respiratory complications, I have to deal with that problem too. I have Interstitial lung disease and my breathing is not good.
    Please tell your mom to keep the faith. I am celebrating her NED. That is a good thing. She can do it.

    Keep celebrating your mom is dancing with NED!
    I say: Keep the celebration going! Even if you are freaked out, don't let your mom know how worried you are--she is already a worrier. This aneurysm diagnosis is too new for all of you. Once you get more information, you will all feel better.

    I agree that you and your siblings should get checked, too.

    Great news about NED
    and as cliche as it is, the take one day at a time is the only approach that works for me. Focus on today. I hope your mom gets some good news about her other health issues.

    This is just crazy ! My Dad had an aa and did well with the surgery if your Mom needs that, hopefully it is small and slow growing. Your Mom is a fighter ,proven by what she has survived already.
    Sometimes I feel like we are on some weird cosmic game show tittled " How much S**t can they take " Stock up on the ativan and hopefully your Mom won't need the surgery Good luck Wendy !
