well the Gemzar chemo stops me up like a BRICK is there any reason why I cannot/should not take a laxitive every couple of days to help me out? It seems to be the only thing that works?

    I wouldn't think a mild
laxative would be a problem but check with the doc anyway. Try eating about 5 prunes a day as well. That always helps me.

My chemo treatment did the same thing to me. The clinic recommended I take Metamucli. The other over the counter laxative escapes me. Talk with the clinic. It is miserable being constipated. You shouldn't have to suffer.

    I think the recipe
is: 1 c. all bran cereal
    1 c. applesauce
    3/4 c. prune juice
take a few tablespoons with LOTS of water and it should "work" within a few hours.
I used Miralax through about 2 months of treatment...didn't have the above recipe at the time.
    Good luck,

So in the back of my book they gave me it says eat bran muffins, beans whole wheat bread, punes nuts trail mix sun flower seeds raisins, brown or wild rice. So today I ate total with about 5 prunes in it whole wheat english muffin with peanut butter I hope this works.....usally icecream or milk helps me because i am a little lactose intolerante but it isn't working so i might have to sit with a very large bowl of icecream to help me out. I have noticed the two days i went the day becfore I was more active maybe exercise will help..good luck big hugs a nd prayers for you....

I still have to take miralax
I still have to take miralax every night. I had a rectal fissure that I had surgery on between chemo and radiation. It still did not heal for months. So I have to be very careful or I could end up with more problems. I dont like the idea of taking medicine like this, but it beats the alternative. Sometimes we have to do what we have to do!

I asked a constipation question not long ago. Track it down. The ladies were full of good advice. You can develop a plan A, B, C, etc.

I know when I was on Vicadin ( spelling ? ) that I had to use a stool softener. I just bought some at the local pharmacy. Worked really well.

My oncologist said that Senekot was OK to use. I used it for a couple of days after every chemo. I drank LOTS of water and ate lots of fiber, but still needed the extra help after each chemo.

    Libby I empathize with you.
Libby I empathize with you. I had that problem wth chemo and have it now with femara. Stool softeners help and when I was doing chemo I took milk of magnesia. None worked all that great but they helped.

I find that juicing keeps me regular along with a little help from the stool softeners.

Hope you can find something that works for you. I'll never forget that horrible feeling after my first chemo.
