I took Claritin....
for the pain with the neulasta shot. I took one the day before chemo and then for six days afterwards and never had a pain from the shot. I took it every time. I read about it on this board and it works.

check with doctor
My doctor put me on it when I started with a cold (Claritan D 12 hour) along with Tamiflu, justs to make sure I didn't get something more than a cold and to knock it down as quickly as she could. That said, I called in because my onc is a bear about taking anything! I can't take anything that he hasn't aproved. So I'd ask first but tell him, or her, what everyone here said. I didn't have a problem with nulasta so can't speak to that issue.0 -

Claritin D and Claritin are 2 different medications. Claritin is an antihistamine--generally safe, usually few side effects.
Claritin D is an antihistamine plus a decongestant (pseudoephedrine). Decongestants are less safe because, in simple terms, they speed up your heart and cause your blood vessels to constrict. Decongestants also have more drug-drug interaction, so always check with your doctor before taking one.
"Cardiovascular
Pseudoephedrine causes vasoconstriction which generally does not produce hypertension, but may be problematic for patients with preexisting hypertension. Arrhythmias may be produced in predisposed patients. Rarely, pseudoephedrine has been reported to cause coronary artery spasm and chest pain.
Adverse effects which have been reported during therapy with loratadine and pseudoephedrine included dizziness, syncopal episodes, palpitations, ventricular arrhythmias including torsades de pointes, cardiac arrest, and cardiac death."

I took it for the leg pain from Neupogen. It really helped. Bought it over the counter,.

I am starting chemo tomorrow 4/13/11, and Clariten was recommended the day of and a few days after treatment to help with Neuprogen shot? Since it is spring, I am assuming it will help with allergies too. I have no idea if it will work, but anything that might help with the bone pain is worth a try. Hope that helps.0 -
Claritin D
On Thanksgiving I caught a really nasty cold. I rarely ever got colds or flu in the past and this one is still in full effect now January 22. I began chemo the 2nd day of December and also get Neulasta and Xgena. Is it safe for me to take Claritin D? Or, would it just keep the cold from clearing out? Thanks for your help.

Call your team
I would suggest that you call your onco office. They are the best to advise you regarding what is best to take. Claritin D has a decongestant. While we are often advised to take Claritin for SE, everyone's regiment of chemo is different. Whatever is going around seems to be lingering . . . I hope you find relief soon!
Get checked out to be sure it has not settled as a sinus infection if you feel stuffy.
