weight lost - not a good sign?
I hope you all have a fabulous weekend!
Is it normal to have weight lost after liver resection? I worry it's not a good sign - would it be the cancer cell coming out and depriving her nutrients?
Today is the 13th day after my mum's liver resection. Her diarrhea is under control in the end, she has appetite and can sleep. She even manages to walk to the park alone today. Why is she keep losing weight? I'm so scared and worried... am I thinking too much?

I believe it's normal
I was warned by my surgeon to bulk up before surgery because my liver resection would make me lose weight. Now, I'm a weird one in that I never react how the doctors say I will & come up with weird side effects they haven't heard of- I actually gained about 10 pounds with my liver resection- maybe fluid retention & lack of exercise probably for me, but that's just me. I know that the doctors expect the weight loss.

So, Im sure the radiation, diarheaa (spelling) has a lot to do with it. Now that she is resting and sleeping well she should start to put the weight back on. A great diet to enhance her gain slowly but surely will most likely do her the best service. Ensure or Boost or any type of supplement drink may help but she should start to bring the weight back soon. If not have another check with the Dr...if weight loss persists be sure to get her in and they have something that will increase her appetite if necessary called I think MEG-ACE. It will make you eat anything that is not bolted down...It is an appetite enhancer......buzz0 -
15 pounds
I lost 15 pounds, but then within the month put it right back on. As Buzz said, diarrhea is probably a part of that, and once it's controlled, she should start a weight gain. Way to early to worry about cancer back.

Weight loss
I'm 5' 4" - I went into the hospital at a fat 178lbs and
came out a month later at a whopping 123 lbs. I dropped to
119 lbs before beginning to gain some back(I'm now 138 lbs.)
So yes, as all those others have said.... surgery is the best way
to lose the pounds; Nuttin' beats the cancer diet!
Get her some Ensure Plus. It'll give her an appitite and help
gain some weight. The body uses a ton of energy (glucose) when
it's trying to fix things, that equates to burning off fat that
was once getting stored as weight. No problamo'...

Dear Lisa,
Thank you very much for your sharing. I think I have been thinking too much...or being a bit too sensitive.

Dear Winter Marie,
Thank you very very much for your reassurance. We are going to see the oncologist tomorrow. She has only had her appetite back and she has to start chemo again. I feel so so bad about this.
Thanks again and I hope you are all well!

Thank you very much buzz! For your advice and care!
I just bought her a pack of chocolate flavor Ensure. I hope she will start drinking them soon! I can't force her to eat or drink anything unless she wants to...

Thank you very much for your positive reply! I will try to think healthily from now on! I actually never thought of the concept that when the body is fixing something (re-grow the liver), it will burn off some fat for that! I feel a lot better now!
I have bought my mum some Ensure yesterday and hope she will drink them soon!
Thanks again!!!

I don't have the answers for you as I have not had this surgery, but I want you to know I am thinking about you + your Mom.
Thank you very much for your care! I feel a lot better now!
We are going to see the oncologist tomorrow and I hope he will not suggest my mum to start chemo right away! I'm hoping she can have at least a couple of weeks more to rest and put on some weight. She only has 4 chemo treatments so far and she is already scared of it!
I'm also thinking about you often and have been praying for you and the other people here on the board!

There's a dozen or more different types of "Ensure", but
the one that says "Plus" is the one that helps you gain weight
and provides the protein for healing!
I used it after the operation(s) in 2006, and again with the
most recent one(s). It's expensive stuff, but I have to admit,
it works!
The Chocolate one was difficult to drink for me (and a few
others I've talked to), while the vanilla, almond, and strawberry
were the easiest. For weight gain, use the "Plus" version.
Better day's are coming! Think positive.

Unfortunately, Ensure Plus is not available here in Hong Kong! I guess I will have to go to US and stock up when I go there in June.
Oh maybe I can try amazon and see if they have it there!
Thanks a lot for your valuable information! I'm really hoping better days are coming too. Thank you very much for sending me so much positive energy and thoughts!
