Wig or hats?
a wig only
scarves and hats only
or
both?
Does one option have an advantage over another?
Thanks!

Scarfs & hats for me. I had
Scarfs & hats for me. I had a really nice wig to. Wig was sooooo hot. However if we went out somewhere that I felt I needed to wear it then I suffered through it. I was also going through the Hot flashes, so that may have had alot to do with it.

All three
Hi Nancy,
Hoping that you don't NEED chemo, but if you do there are lots of options. I had a wig that I wore to work when I would be having a public meeting, but I preferred scarves and hats. I found the wig to be hot and not as comfortable as a scarf. When I was outside during the summer I liked a soft baseball syle cap because I could lift it up a little and let some air in. But I think I wore scarves the most. I mostly used the wig when I didn't want to draw attention to myself (or away from someone/something else). As soon as my hair started comeing back I stopped wearing anything on my head.
Good luck!

Wigs for me
I chose to wear a wig in public. I worked all through chemo and just felt more comfortable with hair. The second I came home though the wig was off and I wore cotton caps. I bought a very nice wig which I use for work and to go out. Then I bought a couple inexpensive wigs online to use at the gym or for working in the yard. I also had a 'halo' which is kind of a headband with hair, to wear under hats and caps.
Just one note. When I got my "good" wig, I really didn't like it. It kind of hung in my face and I felt it looked a little too fake. Then I found out that many hair salons will trim and style wigs for free for cancer patients. I went to a salon and had my wigs styled and now I love them. So if you aren't happy with the way you look in the wig, be sure to have it styled.0 -

I have all three and I use them, but I prefer the scarfs because they absorb the sweat from my flashes. I wear my wig(s) when I am going out somewhere special, but damn is it hot! I used lots of hats in the winter, but they can get hot also. It really is a personal choice. Try all three and see which works for you. Good Luck!
Much Peace,

I didn't need chemo and hope you won't.
To help you some my 2 friends did take chemo. One wore scarves to work. She worked with the public. The other one wore a wig.It was uncomfortable. She said as soon as she got home she took it off.Wigs are hot and if treatment is in the summer that would make it worse. Also the wigs are very tight the one friend mentioned.Gave her a headache.
When I'm shopping I see people with scarves and hats.

For myself, I felt strongly that there was no way I was going to be any more uncomfortable or inconvenienced by cancer than I already was, so I didn't cover my head unless I was outside in the sun. At work, running errands, at the gym, at church -- everyone got to see my lovely little bald head.
I did chemo during a San Fernando Valley summer, so being cold wasn't a problem -- if I was outside for more than a few minutes, I always wore a hat or headwrap, because you have to be careful about that delicate skin on your scalp that hasn't seen the sun since you were a baby. I've never been a hat person before, so I actually had fun collecting lots of cute ones -- I bought them from the ACS' TLC site (tlcdirect.org).

I started chemo April 30th-10 I had a wig I really liked but soon decided it was to hot. I am in Texas and it is usually very warm by the end of April and gets hot fast. I wore the wig only for special ocassions. I liked bandanas because the cotton material was cool and they are cheap! I had a lot of them in all different colors. I had a few caps but prefered a baseball cap. Best of luck. God Bless

For me it was mostly hats.
For me it was mostly hats. I have two wigs, I wore them a total of two times. I never felt that scarfs were secure. It was winter, so I liked the security, warmth, and ease of hats.
I hope you won't have to do chemo so this won't be an issue for you.

First time around, hats
First time around, hats only. This time I bought a wig, but have only worn it once for about a minute and a half. lol I wear baseball hats, knit hats and wrap my neck with scarves to keep warm. When summer comes it will be baseball caps unless I have a special occasion, then it may be the wig!0 -
All three
I wore all three depending on where I was going to be. Since I sing in the choir at church I wore my wig there so as not to be a distraction, otherwise hats & scarves when out of the house. I had a lot of fun with them! Around home, nothing, so my head would stay cool. I got a short haircut when I knew I was probably going to lose my hair and took the catalog along so my stylist could help me pick out a style and color that would suit. Once my hair started to come out I shaved it all off. (Letting it fall out on its own can hurt!) I tried to take very good care of my scalp while I was bald and my hair started coming back very quickly, while I was still getting Taxatere. My last treatment was the day before Thanksgiving and by Christmas I was going hatless. Just got my hair trimmed up, shaped, last week so it's of even length now. I think keeping my head cool helped the hair to grow back better but when outside you have to keep covered to prevent sunburn. Hope all goes well for you!!!!!0 -

Felt like I had a dead animal on my head! I went with scarves--mostly cotton. I got real jazzy with them--tied them in funky ways and color coordinated with my outfits. I ordered most of them from www.headcovers.com. Their prices were reasonable and even had some good sales from time to time.
I also sometimes wore cotton beanie-type caps--usually only in the house when my head was cold or walking my dog. I also went naked a lot in the house. So, so comfortable.
Good luck to you.

Go with comfort!
Ihate to wear anything on my head - always have so had I gone through Chemo in summer I'd probably gone "au naturale" a lot of the time. However it was winter here and winter is bitterly cold so always had someonething on head - even sleeping. In the start I wore scarfs mostly as while i liked my wig the first on I had was a much cheaper on and when the wind blew it was so obviously a wig that it only got worn to Church or sometimes if we went to dinner. After I got my better/shorter wig, I wore it a lot. Also wore watch caps(stocking caps) a lot and Mamba Soks. None of the 'store bought' scarves fit the way I really liked so made a lot - each one a little different and definately different materials, colors and patterns. Hats I never wore.
Chose what is most confortable for you - not what was for someone else.

All 3
Although I only wore my wig 2-3 times, I did like having that option when I was going somewhere fancy. It made it easier to feel "dressed up" without having to try to match a hat or scarf to what I wanted to wear.
I probably wore scarves and hats about 50/50. Like Traci, I enjoyed the shopping part! The hats I liked best were the ones from TLC. Very comfortable and I got lots of compliments too! I've kept a few of my favorites so that I can still have them as an option.
I'm hoping that your Oncotype comes in low, but I know you want to do whatever it takes to beat this once and for all, and I'm sure you will!!!

I used all 3. I didnt think
I used all 3. I didnt think i'd want a wig, but I got a free one from my cancer center, and I wore it out a few times. I wore stocking caps alot (went thru chemo during a cold midwest winter), but my favorites by far were to wear head scarves/bandanas. I bought a few 100% silk scarves off of ebay, a Coach one & a Christian Dior one, both used, but they felt so good on my head, and were lightweight enough to not make me sweat, and the designer logos made me feel fabulous when i really felt like crap.
*hugs*

Thank you all for weighing
Thank you all for weighing in! I know I have to make my own decision, but it does help to know that wigs are hot, that most didn't prefer to use them most of the time and that there are places I wouldn't have thought of where I can get cute hats and scarves at reasonable prices. Hopefully I won't even need to worry about this, but........

wigs, hats, scarves
I got 6, count em, 6 wigs right after my first chemo. Man, they were every color! Well, they are hot and itchy. They were hardly ever worn. so far, I have given away 3 to friends who ended up with cancer after me. I got a couple of baseball style caps/hats that said things like "Cancer sucks" and "No hair day". I only wore the hats twice, when I went to a 5k race and everyone was wearing hats or visors. I bought bunches of scarves and turbans. Those are what I ended up wearing. When I was home, I went without anything.
By the way, my hair was back good enough to go without a head cover 3 months after my last chemo.
Wish you the best!0 -

And I'm not going to tell you how many I have! I wore mostly scarves in the summer, and since I also went through winter, I wore a lot of knit hats. And here it is spring and I still can't go out of the house without a headcover so now I'm wearing mostly baseball type hats, but will probably be back to scarves again soon.
My favorite scarves are www.tittilatingturbans.com and www.4women.com (Beaubeaus). Headcovers.com has a great selection of both hats and scarves.
I hope you don't need to have chemo and can skip the whole bald thing, but mostly not have to deal with the side effects

I preferred wigs to scarves or hats. I wore a wig when I went out- but when at home- the wig came off and I just went"topless". My chemo ended last August and my hair is coming back! Nice to have my own hair again!!
Good luck to you!
Thank you very much all my new friends! I found out yesterday I will be having the chemo, so this info is certainly coming in handy!
