hip dislocation?
I finished 6 rounds of chemo for stage IV cancer last May. So far the treatment was a complete success and I'm in the watch & wait mode.
Now after having the dislocation, the orthro Dr. said that it may be related to side effects from the chemo. Something to do with soft tissues around the implant. I realize
mine is a very unique situation and probably not shared by anyone else on this discussion
board, but I was wondering if anyone heard of this type of chemo side effect.
I did a little reseach on some chemo & ortho sites, but could not find a relationship.
Thanks, Steve

Hip problems, too!
Hi Steve,
Wow, I never thought I would find anyone having hip and joint issues on this board. I have recently been trying to figure out why I would have hip and joint pain, and have researched chemo and additional meds looking for a connection.
I am 42 and was treated in 2007 with cisplatin, 5-FU and concurrent IMRT radiation for 3B inoperable EC. I take 40-60 mgs of omeprazole daily to help swallow food. Last fall, while dancing (gentle swaying, nothing wild) I heard and felt a pop from my right hip, and could not bear weight on it without tipping over, and I had wicked pain. After a day I could put weight on in, but it was very sore. Since we were on vacation, and each day brought improvement, I skipped the doctor and popped motrin. The bruise that appeared on my upper outer thigh was enormous, though I had no physical contact with any surface.
Fast forward to the present time, when I am still having occasional discomfort. I have avoided my walking routine for the past 6 months, but am trying to restart slowly for a short distance. Naturally, my hip is a bit more sore. My knees are stiff and a bit uncomfortable, too.
Today I was reading about omeprazole and similar medications that cause bone issues. Weaning isn't an option, but I hope that the medication doesn't do further damage. Omeprazole is already suspected in causing polyps in my stomach-ah, the side effects of treatment!!!
I will continue to look for any correlation. I know that some of the chemo treatments and steriods used for lymphoma can cause bone and joint problems. I wonder if the same holds true for us EC survivors?
Positive Thoughts!

Hi Steve and Lisa, Very interesting!. I took cisplatin and 5-fu in '07 and '08. I have trouble with a knee that has made me walk with a limp for years. Recently my left hip started bothering me, then the right hip jumped out of joint a couple of times--VERY painful. I finally was checked out by my orthopedist. He said the hips had nothing wrong and suggested therapy and walking with a cane. Nothing has helped. I am going to keep the cane because it does help with the limp and eases the pain when walking. My right hip is ok most of the time, but the left feels like hot daggers when I am walking.I never thought it had anything to do with chemo.
I also took omeprazole until recently. It was causing some side effects so I stopped it.
I'm going to start looking and see if I can come up with some info .
Let us know if you have any more information,

Hi all,
Thanks for your replies and concerns.
I met with my oncologist yesterday to discuss any chemo side effects that could be related to my hip dislocation. He said he didn't know of any chemo side effect that could
contribute to a dislocation. But he said he would bring it up at the weekly staff meeting.
I'm being treated at a regional cancer treatment center, so someone might have some ideas.
However, he did mention that I have an elavated ALPs level. This started with the chemo
treatments, but never subsided. This could be a sign of a bone disorder, and might be related to the dislocation.
I do have a tale that should be of interest to William. After receiving a good Pet-scan
report in July, I decided it was time for a road trip. I figured Mass. to Key West over 3 weeks would be good. On my return leg, I spent several days visiting with friends in Poquoson Va. On leaving, I picked up a coffee & an apple fritter from the 7/11. As I crossed the bay/tunnel bridge, the apple fritter dislodged the top half of a rear molar. At the time, not knowing it was a tooth I spit it out into the Bay. Maybe this was a sign of things to come.
I don't know what kind of medical mishaps are in my future, but I was invited to Poquoson and Cape Hatteras for the next couple of weeks. I'm going!
Take care,
