How many of us have thyroid issues along with the BC?
She believes that the thyroid and bc are related, but when one study shows a link, another one discounts those findings. She stated that it makes sense as the common link between the two is the immune system.
After reading another post, I am just really curious as to how many of us are affected by both bc and thyroid issues. Just seems too coincidental that so many of us have both!
Thanks Everyone
Carol

I don't -
have any problems with thyroid at this time. But I've had to keep it checked all my life as Drs say that I'm a big candidate for getting thyroid cancer. As a small child (just before I was 2 in 1948) I had my tonsils out and to prevent them from growing back, radiation was done to my throat. They were wrong - tonsils grew back anyway and I still have them at almost 65 LOL. Now that I've had Rads for IBC and part of my neck was included (and burned bad) need to be even more careful about keeping it checked.

Yes...
I became hyperthyroid within 2 months of finishing treatment. Have tried oral meds for 15 months, trying to get it under control and are now at the point where we are going to use radioactive iodine to kill the thyroid.
My endocrinologist told me that he has seen a relationship between chemo/rads and thyroid issues.
The thyroid problems are auto-immune issues so I don't know if that is why they seem to be triggered by chemo/rads.
I have also talked to others whose thyroid went "nuts" after bc.

Good question. I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease.
Well I just went to my first endocrinologist appointment yesterday and I also have Hashimoto's. Glad you spelled it first
I also have 2 nodules and am hyperthyroid. I am producing too much calcium.0 -

I was dx with Graves Disease (over active thyroid) 12 years before my bc dx. I had the radioactive iodine treatment and have often wondered if this factored into the equation of why I got bc. Sure gives us something to think about.....
Hugs to all you thyroid issue ladies, Sally0 -
thyroid
I have thyroid nodules and a cyst and the whole mess was biopsied last fall and all is well. But I've been slightly hypothroid for a few years *before* BC. However, I am a nurse and most of my older patients (like over 50) are on thyroid. So it's partly a function of age.

I had my thyroid removed about 7 years ago, 4 years before any BC stuff started. It had become enlarged with numerous nodules, none of them malignant, but Dr. decided it needed to be removed. I've been on synthroid since then.

I had been on thyroid meds. for a few years[if I didn't have chemo brain I could tell you how long exactly] before my bc diagnosis. I have an enlarged thyroid and have hypothyroidism..It sure is interesting...0 -
Nothing diagnosed,
but I have wondered for a long time if I didn't have an underactive thyroid. I have fibromyalgia and my energy level is usually very low. Very dry skin, hair okay, metabolism slow. Nothing shows in bloodwork, but have been told that sometimes it doesn't.
How/what brought on this dx with you?

I have been sotired i had them check my thyroid. They only did one blood test, and said it was ok. However I have it in my family, my sister has hashimotos. My aunt has thyroid issues. None of them has BC but makes you wonder.0 -

I lost 30 pounds in just under 3 months. My PCP started looking for a reason, although she kept telling me that it must be a recurrence or mets. She ordered various blood tests & called to say that I had a hyperactive thyroid and she preferred that my onco got me an endocrinologist....so he did.
I also had heart palpitations, but I really only felt them at night when I was trying to sleep.
Mine has been a battle of medication, trying to regulate my thyroid and it hasn't worked We have decided to destroy my thyroid, but because I wouldn't be able to be around/close to people, I am waiting until my daughter has recovered from her surgery and is back on her feet.

Hi there. I had throid cancer, and then was diagnosed with bc...I never had radioactive iodine, so I can't blame that for my bc...
To date (still waiting for it) I haven't had any rads or chemo yet...but my thryoid cancer is now back as well.
thy ca in 2009 (not in lymph nodes)
bc in 2011 (not in lymph nodes)
reoccurance of thy ca in 2011 and spread to lymph nodes
the dr's said they will treat the bc first, then the thyroid
One of my sisters had the exact same as me, starting 10 years ago with the thyroid then breast...her two sons have also had the thyroid ca at very early ages...both 29 (2 yrs apart)
Another sis has had the thy ca as well.
I am looking into genetic testing for myself...if I hear of any link between the breast & thyroid I will let you all know...there sure seems to be a genetic link for both in my family...not sure if they are related or not.
I'll be asking this when I get to the genetic group...0 -

I had thyroid cancer 5 years ago and had half of my thyroid removed. They are still keeping their eye on 2 nodules I have on the half that is left. In fact, my Onc suggested I contact my Endocrinologist to check on them. I keep forgetting to call. I will call Monday. I don't know if there is a link between bca and thyroid issues, but it sure seems like it.

I was diagnosed with
I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis with very low thyroid levels about 9 months after Katherine was born in 1982. In 1987, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Two of my sisters have also had breast cancer but not thyroid issues, but I can't help but think that the thyroid disease could be related.
Especially since I still have abnormal thyroid antibodies. I have been on synthroid since 1982 and see an endocrinologist at least yearly since my thyroid levels sometimes go screwy on me. And I suck at being able to tell if I am hyper or hypo--better just to be followed by an expert.
How many of us have autoimmune diseases in general--if not thyroid something else?0 -

I just started
Hi Sue,
I just started gaining weight, tired and thinning hair. I was always really thin and high energy with really thick hair. At the same time, they found that my bladder was full of tumors, and kept growing new nodules and the original ones kept growing til my whole thyroid was a non functioning nodule.
Have no idea other than a compromised immune system. My cortisol level is like I am in fight and flight mode also. I have 9 living sisters and brothers with no thyroid issues. I had a brother who had thyroid issues and he died of bladder cancer.
It really got me thinking again, when so many on this board were mentioning their thyroid issues.0 -

Hi There...I have also shown signs of sarcoid...nothing for sure, but noticed when I had my sentinal nodes biopsies...showed signs sarcoid which is autoammune disease...with everything else on my list right now, this is the least of my problems....0 -
yes
I have had Hashimotos for over 15 yrs. I have never considered the fact that BC and thyroid disease could be related.
I am interested in finding out more now. I've got some reading to do,,,,thanks for the heads up
