no oncologist

in Thyroid Cancer #1
Has anyone heard of not having an oncologist after getting a cancer diagnoses? I had a right thyroidectomy in February with a diagnoses of Hurthle cell carcinoma. I am having the left side and lymph nodes removed April 6th and I have not seen an oncologist yet. Is this normal?

    I am six years out with a hurthle cell carcinoma diagnosis and have never seen an oncologist, only an endocrinologist. I don't know if it's normal, but they never referred me to one which I thought was strange.

    Sue,

    I do not have an oncologist. However, I have an endocrinologist who specializes in thyroid cancer. Also, I never saw the endocrinologist until after my surgery, but I had made the appointment before the surgery. Though my cancer is Papillary.

    The Endocrinologist I see is a specialist in thyroid cancer and other thyroid diseases

    I am now 1 year out from papillary and follicular thyroid cancers

    I was told that unless things start to go very bad that I will not need to see an oncologist

    I would ask your endocrinologist next time you visit.

    I have not seen an endocrinologist either. My doctor is an Otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat) and have not seen anyone else yet. Should I look for an endo?

    Oh yes, I would highly recommend it. Or, an Oncologist that specializes in Endocrine cancer.

    yes
    yes you should be talking to an endocrinologist... your ENT doc should be able to recomend and make a referal to one for you.

    Yes I would definately look for an endo, just make sure they specialize with thyroid cancer as someone pointed out to me that they deal with so many different kinds of cancers, it may be hard to find one that knows alot specifically about thyroid cancer. Good luck and keep us posted as I am learning alot from others posts.
