My doctor just told me the strangest thing

. I went in for my 6 month check-up and she did all the normal things, mirror down the throat say eeeee, looked at my charts and then said I was cured. I never associated the word cure with cancer before, took me all day to say she is the dr. and run with it. So I guess for now I dont have cancer. I dont post often because I feel since I had such an easy time with treatments,I have nothing to share, just maybe since I had an easy time I should post more.

    Nervous for what I am about to experience
    Can you tell me about your treatments and side effects? I am 38, eat healthy, and exercise 6 days a week. The doc told me that I would handle the 35 radiation treatments and cisplatin well, but I read many horror stories. It's truly refreshing to see someone who didn't think it was all that bad...please elaborate on your experience.

    Hi Don

    The doc knows what he is seeing and if it looks good to him there is a good chance that all will be well. Yes there is always a chance that sometime it still there, but like you said for now just enjoy life and be happy. Being happy is one of the best cures for the body it keeps it strong and healthy.

    Thanks for the good news

    I cant comment on the cisplatin, since I didnt have it. The worst part of the radiation was the last week and a half, but like you I exercised a lot, I used to run 5 miles every morning, and hit the weights for 45 minutes. So your a step up, and it depends on the person we are all different, first thing you need to do is not have the doc tell you you can handle it, you need to tell yourself you can handle it. dont want to scare you but the mask was my worst part until I learned to relax. Side effects so far that is, are minimal, during treatment, burnt neck, hoarse voice but if your here you probably have that already,fatigue,heavy mucuos, and it hurts like hell to swallow but you have to do it. if you want more information you can pm me.

    Wow
    "Cured". Excellent. That would throw me off, too - after hearing so many folks say "docs won't say I'm cured, but say there's no evidence of disease at this time" - to hear "cured" would be a shock, albeit a welcome one. Grab it and go.

    It's funny, really: even after five years and getting the All Clear from ENT Man, he would not use the word "Cured". Instead, he said, "You know where to find me if you need me."

    :)

    Take care,

    another party heard from
    Hi Brian;

    I am 18 months post treatment for squamous cell cancer, unknown primary, lymph node removed-- three clean cat scans post treatment - follow up every 6 weeks with ENT during the first year and now will be doing every 10-12 weeks. I had IMRT 30 treatments with no chemo. I worked every day during treatment- would leave work at 3 pm to drive the 1 hour to treatment. I drove myself. Remember the mantra of this board: Everyone is different. I did not have a peg tube; I did lose 40 lbs - look great and have maintained my weight for over a year. Dry mouth; some mucous; some foods do not go down well.... nothing I can't deal with. This is just a brief summary of where I was and where I am now. Feel free to pm if you want more information on my experience. Just know that you will get through this. Sometimes, people make comments through their personal lens of experience. Sometimes, they are wrong. Good Luck! Dazey
