Counting sheep.
I have a lot of trouble sleeping, too. Does counting sheep work? Well, I do something like that watching TV, trying to drop off. Sometimes it seems to work. I just tried stopping sleeping pills --- just weak over-the-counter stuff was all I was taking --- and that seems to help. That is, it may be that the sleeping pills were keeping me awake. If it is the need to urinate that wakes you up, then BPH (Benign Prostate Hyperplasia) is something you should check out with a urologist. (You won't necessarily sleep better, but you may come to understand better why you are wakeful.)

exercise and card games
Dear Pepe,
My mum wasn't able to sleep lately (probably because of the surgery on Monday), I keep her busy during the day and it seems to me that she sleeps better in the last couple of days.
We go for a walk for 1km, do some stretching exercise. I don't let her drink any tea after 12 noon. We play card games in the afternoon. Usually by 9pm or 10pm, she will be exhausted and fall asleep. Although I notice she will get up around mid-night and find it hard to fall asleep again. In that case, she will play a bit of her mobile phone games (not the exciting one) and eventually she will fall asleep.

Awww Sweet Dreams
Heck having a good night sleep even with my sleeping pills has been hard since being diagnosed. Seems I'm not getting to bed until 2:00 a.m. even with the pill and I'm still wide awake at 3:00. My mind just keeps going and going just like the energizer bunny. Thinking about all and everything. In April I've got many tests coming up and not looking forward to it. Worry is my middle name. Hoping that you get some relief to sleep and hoping it comes soon. We all need a good night of rest. BTW, thank you my dear friend for thinking of me while I've been off the board. Hope you feel better soon

Sleepless in (name your town)....
Hi Pepe,
Between rounds of chemo I typically had sleepless nights. I figured it was a rebound thing - trashed during chemo with recovery between rounds giving me energy to spare. Now, post hysterectomy (which I'm sure you have not had) insomnia is my new normal and I've accepted that fate without narcotics.
Things that help me:
Meditation (recorded meditation will help you get started)
Reading
Soothing music
Avoid daytime naps - stay active during the day and restful at night
Benedryl
If you cannot sleep sometimes it is best to get out of bed and do something else until you can relax and then try sleep again. I know if I just lay in bed cursing the sleep that will not come I get even more restless.

I rarely sleep
Some nights I will stay up the entire night, and then I may take an hour nap during the day, and I'm good to go. There have been a few times in my life, where I have not slept or napped for 2 days in a row.
When I haven't slept much for several nights, and I know I need to get some sleep for sure, I take 1mg of Lorazepham, and a 5mg Oxycodone. This combination works well for me, and the Lorazepham helps a lot when I have anxiety, and the Oxycodone helps with pain. But, these are both highly addictive drugs, so I don't do this often.
Some people say just the Lorazepham itself is enough, but everyone is different.
My friend recommended Tylenol PM, she swears by it. I bought a bottle, but I haven't done the research yet to see if there are any contraindications for someone on chemo.
The sheep thing never worked for me. The thought of all the wool makes me itchy.

Dear all,
I have been reading all your posts and notice a lot of you have sleeping problem like my mum. According to the doctors (both Chinese and Western), natural health professionals and ancient medical books, the blood flows to our liver and helps it to recover, regenerate and rest from 11-1 (doesn't matter whether is day time or night time).
Please try to sleep at least from 11pm to 1am or 11am to 1pm.

The reason why you don't sleep is because you worry about everyone on here. lol Hugs you've been given good suggestions, maybe the sleeping tablets you are on have stopped working? You might need to go back to your GP about that. But if you can do without them by natural means then go for it.

Sorry you're not able to sleep! Things I've tried when I've had sleepless nights have been: 5HTP (which is also a mood enhancer, but can make you a little drowsy- can be purchased over the counter), Valerian root, Tylenol PM, Advil PM, little dissolvable beads from the health food store (I can't remember what they are, but they didn't work at all for me either), and regular over the counter sleep aids from the drug store/Wal Mart. I don't like to take anything that might become addictive, so I don't take the regular sleeping pills anymore. I would steer away from prescribed sleep aids, as they can have some really weird side effects- my father in law would sleep walk and say really crazy things when he took them (he took Ambien). Tylenol PM and Advil PM worked for me, but just remember too much tylenol can be hard on the liver.
Also, have some kind of warm drink about an hour before bed & avoid anything with caffeine after about 4 in the afternoon.
I find that the decadron (not sure how to spell it) you get infused w/ the chemo really can keep you up. For some reason lately, it's not keeping me up- I'm so groggy most of the time lately that I have no trouble falling asleep. That's good I guess, but I also could fall asleep during the day at any time & that isn't good.

recommended 1/4 tsp (1.25g) turmeric in 1 cup (240ml) warm whole milk at bedtime. It works for me. I've discontinued using prescription sleep aids.
The dr emphasized that you must use whole milk, as the turmeric needs the fat to be properly absorbed.0 -

but I haven't turned the tv off since I did chemo which started 1/09. Can't sleep if it goes off, I'll wake up if I doze off. My poor husband went crazy for awhile, but has adjusted. I used an over the counter sleep aid during chemo which helped when I went to sleep and did let me go back to sleep. I may now be conditioned to the tv, but don't try to get that remote away from me.....as time goes on I find I sleep more and do miss most programs, but if it goes off, I wake up. But it does work and I do get some sleep now, even my husband has adjusted. Just something that has worked for me. At least I don't lay and think, I just watch tv if I wake up......we have gone from a 26 to 40"......it sounds crazy, but works...Pat0 -
