My mom has stage 4 lung cancer and no insurance any suggestions.

My mom has stage 4 lung cancer and no health insurance. She was turned down by our Government insurance Tenn Care here in the state of TN. Does anyone locally or not locally have any advice or information to help me out.

    Luckily, my friend Joe (soccerfreaks) posted a reply to someone who was having a similar problem - I'll copy and paste it here:



    Here are a few ideas for potential financial support.

    This site is put up by the National Institute of Health or some such, and is government-supported.

    Cancer Care, a non-profit org., offers free support and counseling for cancer patients by oncology social workers. They have face-to-face counseling and counceling on the phone. Support groups on the phone are available too and are moderated by an oncology social worker. Call 800-813-HOPE. They can also give you info about financial resources. Check their website: www.cancercare.org

    Gilda's Club - www.gildasclub.org - they offer free social and emotional support. Not sure if they may have financial information but check it out just in case.

    Live Strong - www.livestrong.org - offers one-on-one support.

    American Cancer Society (here) can also give you financial, support, etc. information available in different cities.

    Thank you for the reply. I am scared to death for my mom in many different ways, but I do not want her to worry about the fact that she has no insurance. I want her to concentrate on getting better. So thank you again for the information. I will check all of those out.

    No Insurance
    I understand you financial concerns as I was in the same situation. Check with your hospital and cancer care center to see if they have a financial advisor or medicaid specialist. When my GP referred me to the cancer center for the PET scan they informed the hospital that I was uninsured. I received a call from their financial advisor who set up a meeting with me to discuss all of my finances, she then filled out all the necessary paperwork and before I had my first visit with the onco and rad doctors I was already covered by Medicaid. This "angel" at the hospital also filled out all the necessary paperwork and I was accepted for permanent and total disability, I won't receive my first check until January so money is tight but Medicaid is covering my treatment and prescriptions. As my "Angel" said, "we want you to concentrate on beating the cancer and not have to worry about finances at the same time" I can never thank this woman enough, she truly is a life saver.

    I live in New Hampshire and we don't exactly have the largest hospitals in the country but I'm sure if our hospitals have the financial assistance plan then there must be others who have the same type of plan or something similar.

    I wish I had more answers for you as I know how much the money worries eat away at you.

    social security benefits if she has not worked long enough there is supplement benefits includes medicade medicare it is for people with dissabilities they well rush it through because of her diseasecontact cancer institute or national cancewr society good luck god bless you

    My mom is also going through
    My mom is also going through this and the last thing I want her to think of is financial burden. This is all great information.

    I just tried to get my wife on disability and since she has not worked for 10 years(even though she had worked for 20 years before that)she was denied disabilty..the option was ssi which includes medicare and medicade was available but you have to be on your last meal you are allowed 1 house,1 car, less than 2k in the bank and no other recources(stocks,bonds,or anything ) It's a tough row to hoe. sorry to hear about your mom,you are in our prayers there are a lot of recources as joe talks about just takes a little diggin to find them...god bless

    my boyfriend has stage 4 lung cancer as well and was turned down by tenncare also.u can go to cherokee health systems on western ave they might can help you.if not go to the local health department sign up for indigent care.they pay all medical and drugs needed.i hope this helps you.
