How do you send a private message to someone?

I feel rather stupid because I haven't been able to figure out how to send a private message, although I have been able to reply to one sent to me.
Could anyone tell me the secret?

    Click at the top of the page where it says Home. Under the Connect box it says New Mail, click on that & then you will type the name you want to send the PM to & the message.
