regenerate
I had a third of my right lung removed in 1997 due to cancer and its almost 14 years now since I stopped smoking. I had chest xray in the last week and the consultant has told me that my lungs are now in great condition and its as though they look like i never had an operation!I am delighted with this news so my question is can your lungs regenerate over the length of time as in my case?--kind regards

As far as I know, the only organ capable of regeneration on its own is the liver. But...I've been wrong before.

It's good to hear some good news for a change! There's been so many lost on this site, so when something is posted where someone is doing good, it makes this site worthwhile. All the support on here whether your a patient or a caregiver helps so much.

I just found this site and thought i would share my good fortune with you and i must tell you i am 71 now and expect to live a lot longer as 14 years ago when i was diagnosed i thought my life was over and i must also tell you the consultant/surgeon told me i was a star having survived this long but i had to say to him he was the star that made it possible--he just smiled--best regards0 -

Just one other thing I was told last week by the Consultant/Surgeon he told me I was cured and had been for many years but they wanted to keep an eye on me just in case it should come back so thats why I was getting an xray each year for all those years but now he said as I was cured I no longer had to go back I feel so lucky and as you say there is hope for us all and I wish everyone the best of luck kind regards --Jack0 -

I had my right middle lobe removed the "old way" in December of this year, almost 3 months out and still feeling pain underneath my right breast, feels like I am wearing a bra 4 sizes too small...anyway, I asked my surgeon and oncologist (did not have to have follow up chemo or radiation, was staged 1a) how my body will compensate for the loss of the middle lobe..what he explained to me what that my right lung was like a muscle being cut in half and over time as long as I am healing properly (that is why those breathing exercises are so important following surgery) the top and bottom part of the lung will fill up and expand to compensate for the loss-maybe that is what your doctor is telling you but he used the word regenerate? I have already had a CT scan and will have them for the next 3 months for the first year, etc...it is such great news to hear how long you have survived this-what stage were you? I would recommend to ANYONE out there to have an annual chest x-ray, that is how mine was discovered.0 -

Hi, my name is Joe. I just had half of my left lung removed on jan18th. I have since quit smoking and continue to do my breathing exercises. Regardless, of whether or not your lung regenerates i think you can build it up just like you can with any muscle tissue. But hearing your story and the 14 yrs since quitting is inspiration that i can and will use. Thank you for sharing your hope with me and many others.
