We go for a biopsy tomorrowHondo said:Hi teas
Welcome to the family here on CSN, I am NPC and some of my PET scans come back with a false positive scan because the biopsy showed negative.
Hope that helps

We go for a biopsy tomorrow for my mother who is 83. She finished treatment at the end of August for stage 2 or 3 NpO. Ct scan in Nov. was fine. Scan last week had RO concerned. She said she's sure its recurrence near eye orbit. Surgeon had told us 2 hours prior that scan looked good and nasal endoscope was good??????? We sre working on faith. She also has an MRI and meet with special surgeon to see if he can perform this complicated surgery. RO said prognosis changes only if tumor can't be removed. Hondo, you are a blessing.0 -

Sorry, I meant NCP. Where is the best hospital to treat this, especially for someone my mother's age? I love her so very much.0 -

So sorry for the angst in your writing. This cancer treatment and healing is a bouncy ball at best. I had a "hot zone" 6 months after treatment, but it had shrunk from the original PET scan and they all (Dr's) said that was a good thing. At 9 months, I got a NED report and all is good right now. I had base of tongue and lymph nodes affected and stage 3 or so. I am only 58 years old, so your mom has some years on me, but that is my experience for what it is worth. My question to the dr's would be has it shrunk from the original Pet>..6 months is not a long time after treatment. The radiation stays in your body a long time, 6 months at least and that shows "hot" on the PET scan, or can.
Good luck and all the best,

Steve, thank you so much for your reply. I am really anxious, as you can imagine. They did surgery in June and they removed all of the tumor then-sinus passages and nasal cavity. She received a clean PET scan right after that. She completed radiation end of August-6 weeks. She had a clean CT scan in Nov. She has not had a PET since June. The RO looked at the ct scan last week that was done on Feb. 15 and said she's sure it is recurrence. So stressful. She said she sees something thats 2.7 cm. I don't understand why 2 hours before that the surgeon said everything looks good, just some inflammation. He's supposed to be one of the best-graduated from the Mayo Clinic.0 -

Just to let you know I was told in 2006 that my NPC was back for a third time and that I needed to get on Chemo as soon as possible. I told my Oncal dr no way every again, every time I go to see him for a check-up now he gets on my case about getting back on treatment before the cancer gets too bad. The last time I saw him I had to remind his he been telling me that for over 5 years now, so where is the cancer, if it is that slow growing lets leave it alone and may be I will live another 20 or 25 years.
You have to make sure they are not reading a false positive on the scan, also even a biopsy can be positive but no cancer will be there, why the old dead tumor and scar tissue still had old cancer cells in it, but not active. That is why the doctor has to be carful when reading the pathology or PET Scan report.
Take care and will keep your Mom in Prayer
