Had a CT Scan today.

Just got my quarterly CT scan this morning and will have the results tomorrow. If everything is OK my wife and I are taking our two Dalmatians to Sullivan’s Irish Pub in Carlsbad, because they allow dogs outside at the fire pit, and we’ll have a couple of nice, big Guinness Stouts. My Oncologist tells me that if the cancer returns then in 90% of the cases it happens within one year of the last treatment. My resection was in May, 2009, but my Oncologist is counting from my last Chemo treatment, which was in April, 2010. Have any of you heard about this 90% figure and when it applies, after surgery or after Chemo?

    I heard the same
My oncologist said basically the same thing that if the cancer is doing to come back it tends to come back within the first year but not always. He said that he would not consider me cured of cancer till I am five years removed from my last chemo.

    Guinness Stouts!
Have one for me. I'd treat but I can't get out there...
I think they count it after chemo. It's what you make of the time more than falling into a particular statistic IMO.

Just wondering, do the dogs like Stout?

    The puppy does
It's strange, but our 3 1/2 year old Dalmatian doesn't like wine, beer or even vodka. Both my wife and I are Irish and so we're a little concerned that our Dalmatian may be English. Anyway, the last time we were at Sullivans we caught our 14 week old puppy, Pepper, licking the Guinness glass. Of course, that is much too young to start drinking. We're going to wait until Pepper is 16 weeks before we order her a beer. :)

    slightly different
My onc said in COLON cancer, 80% of recurrences happen within two years but rectal cancer tends to recur later.

I read a study off a link on Colon Club that said in COLON cancer, the average time of recurrence is 17 months + or - 11 months. In a study of people WITH COLON cancer recurrences, 100% happened before 4 years with most recurrences happening around 6 months. It said those people were most probably Stage IV already but the tumors were too small to be picked up on CT scans at the time of original dx.

Congrats on all this good news and enjoy life!
