Invited Michael Douglas
Hope all are well.
I have been away for a while so update on David. We went to Vanderbilt Ingram for a second opinion for his hairy tongue and had a swallow test done. His swallowing was perfect, but needs water with each bite. Dr. told him it the hairy tongue was from the treatment and DO NOT take anymore antibiotics or any meds for it, put nothing on the tongue except for the floride toothpaste she prescribed twice a day and scrape and floss tongue once a day. Told him to start eating orally and get off the tube. She said time frame for removing the tube should be within a few months, after that "6 months" the chances of having it for life are much greater. Told him to get off his butt and walk, she said her patients are made to start walking after 2 weeks of finishing treatments. Dr. Barbara Murphy, she is amazing and wish we had rented an apartment and had his treatments in Nashville instead of Thompson Cancer Center in Knoxville. The doctors here have said NOTHING to Dave about exercise or eating. Haven't even ordered a swallow test yet and he is 4 months out of treatments. Just amazes me the difference in Doctors and hospitals. Like night and day. That is why I am so thankful for this web site and the people here that share the whole ordeal. It has been our life line for a long while now. Thank each and every one of you and God Bless You...Love Life and Live it To The fullest each and every day. Happy Valentines day...

And I Second-
the invite to Michael. Would truly be interesting to hear some details of his treatment, along with his personal feelings of his C experience at Sloan.
I wouldn't be worried about the tube thing. Had mine for over 15 months, and Sweet trumps me for longevity. Just that whenever his ingestion the regular way returns to the time you are certain it's here to stay- then it'll be time for him to join the 2nd BB club.

Invite
Always welcome, actually I think Kimba or someone else might have tried back early on to invite him.
As for fast recovery, I don't think he has necessarily recovered any faster than most of us...I'm sure he still has some crappy days. Those just aren't the days you see him out and about doing appearances.
Best,

Michael kept all his hair so I wonder what sort of chemo he had. Buzz lost all of his hair, and most of his eyebrows and eyelashes.
Hi,
Just my thought. I think that he was able to have a very good quality wig made. there is no way a "star" would show us the true self during stressful times. I tried to see a difference in past and present photos, I still believe it is a really great wig.
Just my thoughts..

Doug lost his beard, nose hair (interesting), ear hair and lower eyelashes, but that seems to have been due to the radiation. His head hair thinned a bit, but that was likely due to the stress of several weeks without eating. He took Cisplatin, which is not supposed to cause hair loss.
We can't imagine that someone like Michael Douglas had an easier or harder time than the rest of us. On the one hand, he's not hurting for money and he and his wife could devote all their energy to his care 24-7. On the other hand, not only did the disease threaten his life, but it threatened his way of life. I doubt it was easy on him and he can be an inspiration to others.
Still, I'd rather be married to Doug. . .0 -

Not sure which one did it, and everyone has differing reactions. But I lost all of my hair for a few weeks.
I had Cisplatin, Taxotere, 5FU and Carboplatin....

My chemo was Cisplatin! My hair thinned out however no one noticed. Radiation at the nape of my neck caused baldness there. My chemo Dr. wrote me a script for a wig as I requested one but mentioned I would not loose it all & that not every chemo causes baldness. I did read that Mr. Douglas donated money to a certain head & neck foundation long before he was ever diagnosed . I much prefer my life as I have a difficult time dealing with all the nosey people in my city & I like my privacy. I felt badly for him & his family as they were
never left alone during his treatment etc.0 -

If Michael did make such a Donation to a H&N foundation- that is righteous, and the kind of noteworthy which commands respect. Thanks for the info.

I would not have any problems with Michael coming here on this board after all he too is a human and just like anyone else he had cancer. One thing about Cancer money don’t get rid of it and cancer does not respect anyone.

I agree, he had cancer just the same as anyone else, and would be an inspiration to us all. I agree that the media followed him around and took pictures of him that he would, I'm sure not have wanted shared. I am hopeful he will check out this site and decide to join us. He may have some info to share and we may have some that would help him ! Never know. I am sure he has his own personal cook, physical therapist, and so on.
Hope everyone is having a wonderful Valentines Day and sharing some love.0 -

I believe he will be more open one day! I think that is inevitable. Maybe he simply needs some time. I would love to have a personal chef etc. You can bet he has all of the above! I know I would lol!0 -

It would be insane to sign on as himself. It would never be kept private. Our little haven would be invaded by those people who stalk and prey on celebreties in thier most human moments.

From the first day he was diagnosed I went on the computer daily to see how he was doing. I am so happy for him and also for his family that he has been blessed so much to get thru this. Cancer shows no mercy to anyone whether you have money or not. I applaud him for his strength and dignity thru his battle.
I really believe that he is a good man and if he could help others he would.

I hope he's been here all along.. and if he has been I'm glad for us and him that we have been unaware of it. .. I hope he has been here because I hate to think of anyone going thru this without those that can relate. It doesn't matter how much money you have, how good your Dr's are ... there is a need to know you aren't alone.0 -

I agree about Michael Douglas, his tv appearances make this treatment look so easy and easy recovery.
Thanks for the comment on the peg tube. I have had mine for 9 months and have used it for 7 months. Not having a lot of luck getting enough calories down. Glad to know I am not the only one. Appreciate it.0 -

I saw him on The Doctors show this morning. Looks like he is doing good! Still has to see doctors every month. Has a hard time getting his weight back. Hope everything goes good for him!
I have been thinking about this for a little bit. Michael Douglas had a great chance to put Head and Neck cancer in the spot light for longer then it has been. Yes, there was alot of conversation about it when it was first mentioned that he was going to have to do treatment. But now, it is slightly mentioned and will soon be forgotten by the Media.
I would only be guessing, but he might have had a tumor on his tongue, we really won't know, because I haven't seen anything about a Primary location. We know that if there was a tumor on his tongue, there might have been surgery to remove the tumor and maybe part of his tongue, which was my case. He might have chosen the Radiation and Chemo only and avoided the chance of having trouble speaking if he had part of his tongue removed. After all, he makes his living acting and the chance of not speaking correctly would be a big issue for him.
As mentioned, he might have already searched this board or others like it. He may have only lurked and learned and never posted. As mentioned above, if he did post, it wouldn't be under his real name as suggested, he would be followed, etc.
He might be an inspiration to some people, but the real people that inspire me are the people of this board. We have a boat load of people here that inspire each other and the new people that come here for advice when they first learn that they have cancer and are like a deer caught in a car's headlights. Their world has just been shattered into a zillion pieces, and we have already experienced it. So having people here that have survived this disease willing to give of their free time to help guide and advise the newer patients is all inspiring to me. You all know who you are as you post often and give sound advice. There isn't enough room here for me to post all the names of you. I Salute You.
