Any golfers out there?

in Colorectal Cancer #1
Hello everyone, I'm a newbie, 74 yrs, colostomy 12.1.10. Excellent health except for the "problem." Going through the, I suppose typical, adjustments of acceptance, schedule, leaks, clothing, etc. Assuming that I resolve or come to grips with these things, the question remains - what does one wear on the golf course? I mean, this time of year a sweater or sweatshirt will hide an open top button on your trousers, but what do you do in warmer weather?

    I golf just like I do when its cold
    I simply take the bag and fold it upwards back over itself and then I can tuck in my shirt. It does stick out a little but ya know what, if anyone asks then I simply either tell them or pull up my shirt and show them. Don't ever be ashame of what you went through to get where you are. The bag is a constant reminder of your war wounds. and always take a couple of spares everywhere you go...It doesn't bother me in the least playing...BTW Im a 10 handicap....whats yours ?....Buzz

    Welcome to the board.

    You mention you are having to leave the top button open on your trousers...is that because of incision or the placement of the stoma?

    I am neither male nor a golfer but my stoma is below the belt line so I don't have any issue with wearing slacks...button or no button.

    You could always start a new trend and opt for looser waist on trousers and go with suspenders, or you might opt for sans-a-belt trousers (elastic in the sides).

    If you have any questions regarding the acceptance, leaks etc. just ask. We are pretty open here in our discussion.

    There are lots of folks here who are glad to share their experiences and offer suggestions.

    Thanks for the response. At the risk of sounding dumb, because obviously if you do it, it works, but aren't you fighting gravity? I'm not sure I understand the concept. Re handicap - like too many things, I took up golf late in life, have been a 15-18 rounds per year golfer, and haven't gotten past a 22. In light of this latest episode in my life I, like most golfers, have decided that this will be the year! (Yeah, yeah we've heard that before.) This time I mean it.

    It's the placement. Stoma is directly at my belt line. If I hike my pants up, I look like all those old guys you see with their pants at their armpits - all I need are sandals and black socks.

    Hastings.....let me try again to explain it....
    my stoma is approx 4" above my waist line(beltline)and so I can't tuck my shirt in with it hanging completely down....I take the very bottom of the pouch and bring it to the top of itself so its half of what it use to be...now you have limited yourself to only half a bag usage until you can untuck your shirt and allow it to hang freely again, but I have normally already done my morning duty and anything else is just nil to none so the "halfbag" if you will takes care of me til my game is over...

    Your stoma may be positioned in a different spot.........buzz

    I can no longer wear pants requiring a belt, zipper, snaps,etc
    due to location of stoma (which was based on what surgeon needed to do once he cut me open)so I wear drawstring or elastic-wasted pants covered by very long, loose T-shirt, shirt, whatever topping.....Bag hangs freely over pants but under shirt(s)......will never dress otherwise again.......steve

    This is the worst issue for me!
    Hi Hastings, My stoma Is an inch below my belly button on the left side. When I dress now I wear long shirts and let them hang over my pants. My pouch hangs over my pants I can not tuck it in its too uncomfortable. Buzz if I did what you say I would have a huge bulge?? Maybe I need a different appliance I use the coloplast sensura 2 piece flex pouches. The bottom of the wafer gets hung up on my pants beltline wearing a belt is uncomfortable. It's easy to hide in the winter here in Boston 25 degrees today. But i am concerned about how to dress in the spring/summer too. I wish I had answers for you but I have the same questions??? Sorry.

    Easy to golf in, and no one will question your style choices, unless you get too wild with the colors ;)

    Thanks for the info - they look great. I had never heard of them. Many golf courses require that you tuck your shirt in and I hadn't figured out how to do that with typical golf shirts. These are designed to hang on the outside so takes that problem away. Thanks again.

    Golf coures owners attire
    I have posted this before but here again is my attire. I wear coveralls everyday, complete freedom of movement and to look more presentable on occasion will wear a shirt over them. I bought the golf course as a summer project to get my mind off cancer and it worked out very well. I'm now 70 and was having a hard time accepting the bag and the thought of having cancer. Now over 2 years later I'm comfortable with it and so far doing great.
    A collered shirt was the only restriction I have ever heard of to play golf, we do not enforce that. I was reised not to judge a man by the clothes he wears, for example Sam Walton, you didn't see him in a suit.     And welcome to our forum. Go to the site "OstomySecrets". They make specific underwear to hold your ostomy bag and also an ostomy wrap to keep it close to the body. Not cheap but just might be the ticket for you.

    Thanks Tina, and thanks to you all for your help. Had no idea how much information was out there.
    Buzz - I understand now and thanks. My stoma location and use of disposable bags limits that solution, but thanks.
